Gang of burglars caught in BW: 24 robberies with 110,000 euros in damage!
In a high-profile case of suspected burglary, four people were arrested who are suspected of causing mischief in several districts in Baden-Württemberg. The investigations by the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office and the Esslingen criminal police department focus on a gang that has been active in the Esslingen, Göppingen, Ravensburg and Konstanz districts since the beginning of 2025. According to reports, the authorities assume that the accused can be accused of a total of 24 burglaries, with damage of over 110,000 euros. In fact, it is a serious matter that has not only financial but also psychological consequences for those affected, as burglaries significantly affect the feeling of security and have a serious impact on the victims' privacy.
On May 22, 2025, a 34-year-old suspect was provisionally arrested in Tübingen. The three male suspects, aged 34, 35 and 39, were caught during a vehicle check in Zwiefalten last week as they returned from Georgia on July 21st. All four suspects have now been taken into custody, and the arrest warrants issued by the Stuttgart District Court are a further step in the fight against crime in the region. In this context, the authorities applaud the progress in solving burglaries, even if developments after the corona pandemic have shown an increase in crime.
A highlight in crime statistics
Crime statistics in Germany show that residential burglaries have increased sharply in recent years in accordance with Section 244 of the Criminal Code. To be precise, around 119,000 thefts in and out of apartments were registered in 2023. This includes around 77,800 cases that are directly classified as residential burglaries. This marks the highest level since 2019, although the numbers are over 50% lower than the 2015 peak of around 167,000 cases. The risk of burglary is particularly high in urban federal states such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg, while Bavaria is considered the safest region. A current report shows that the highest burglary rate in 2023 was recorded in Mülheim an der Ruhr, while Fürth has the lowest rate with 33 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This reflects the different security situations in different regions, highlighting the challenges for the police.
Joint efforts to combat crime
In a different but no less worrying development, a group of three suspects believed to be responsible for 56 burglaries at various kindergartens have also attracted the attention of prosecutors. The perpetrators usually use force to break into the facilities, with property damage costing around 20,000 euros. Interestingly, the perpetrators' main goal is often financial, with a haul of just €4,000. These acts are part of a larger trend that police must further investigate to stop gang theft and keep communities safe. It turns out that the clearance rate for residential burglaries is only 14.9%, which illustrates the difficulties of the investigative work.
The recent arrests and the ongoing investigation are based on a variety of information that the police were able to gain. Public awareness of the anti-crime measure remains crucial to strengthen security in the affected areas. The clearance rate, which varies significantly between the different federal states, shows that more measures need to be taken to stop the criminals. Let us combine our efforts to maintain a sense of security within communities and maintain trust in investigative authorities. We should pay particular attention to urban areas, where crime rates are traditionally higher.
