HSV Hamburg: License for 2025/26 successfully secured!

After turbulent years, HSV Hamburg has regained a firm footing in the world of handball. On December 27, 2025, the club can look back on an eventful history, combined with ups, downs and an impressive comeback. After the bankruptcy in 2016, which was caused by unlawful machinations during the licensing process, HSV Hamburg has finally received the license for the 2025/26 season.

The district court opened insolvency proceedings for HSV Hamburg on January 15, 2016. Insolvency administrator Gideon Böhm was faced with the difficult decision of whether a new beginning was possible or the club would fail. The accusation of license fraud arose due to confusion surrounding the so-called Rudolph millions. On January 20, 2016, those responsible for the Handball Bundesliga revoked the club's right to play because the documents in the licensing process were "not completely and truthfully submitted." This incident catapulted HSV into the third division as the league's first relegated team.

The way back to the Bundesliga

Despite these setbacks, HSV Hamburg showed great fighting spirit. The amateur teams were not affected by the bankruptcy and were able to remain active in the 2015/16 season. The U23 team celebrated promotion to the 3rd league, while the newly formed HSV Hamburg returned to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2018. The great success came on June 23, 2021, when the club was promoted again to the handball Bundesliga after 2004 days.

HSV Hamburg is currently playing in the handball Bundesliga and has made a name for itself as a training club. Managing director Christian Hüneburg expressed satisfaction that the club is in a better situation than last year. Licensing for the 2025/26 season was secured on time after a liquidity gap was closed. Details of the extent of this gap were not published, but Hüneburg expressed gratitude for the support of club patron Philipp Müller, who paid a seven-figure sum last year to secure permission to play.

Licensing and economic stability

The Handball Bundesliga (HBL) decided on Thursday about the awarding of licenses for the coming season. Even if some licenses come with conditions, the economic stability of the clubs was monitored, which is positive despite a tense overall situation. HSV Hamburg received its license on the condition that a liquidity gap be closed by May 5, 2025. The licensing process, which checks the financial performance, infrastructural and legal criteria of the clubs, shows how important fairness and integrity are in German professional handball.

These developments are not only important for the clubs themselves, but also a real reason for celebration for the fans and the entire handball scene in Germany. The coming 2025/26 season will be a very special one, as it marks the 60th season in the history of the Handball Bundesliga. An occasion that players and fans alike can look forward to.

In these exciting times, we can only hope that HSV Hamburg can continue on its successful course and revive the stories of the successful traditions of the past. After all, the club has won numerous titles in the past, including the DHB Cup and the German Championship. A look into the future makes us hope that HSV Hamburg will soon be able to build on its old successes again.
