Leverkusen embarrasses itself in the DHB Cup: Waiblingen wins clearly!
Last weekend, the handball teams in Germany wanted to make a strong impression, but not all of them were blessed with success. It started with Bayer Leverkusen, who had to play against VfL Waiblingen in the women's DHB Cup on August 24, 2025. The game took place at home in Leverkusen, but the hosts had to admit defeat with a score of 23:32. The start of this season was particularly challenging. After relegation from the 1st Handball Bundesliga, Leverkusen retooled properly and signed 13 new recruits, but the beginning was not easy for them.
The situation was similar last year, as Leverkusen and Waiblingen also lost in the first round of the cup. But it wasn't just Bayer Leverkusen who had to struggle with setbacks. The Bergische HC had to admit defeat to Frisch Auf Göppingen in an exciting duel. With a final score of 20:27, Cologne were denied a place in the round of 16, although they were well in the game until the score was 7:6. Unfortunately, they fell behind and were unable to catch up. But the competition wasn't safe either! The women from TuS Metzingen, who won the cup last year, were even eliminated in the first round. In a dramatic derby against TG Nürtingen they overcame a four-goal deficit, but ultimately had to admit defeat 35:37 after double extra time. Liese Fuchs from Nürtingen proved to be the best thrower and played a key role in her team's success. This is a bitter setback for the title holder, while Nürtingen can be happy about progressing. After this long weekend of the first round of the cup, fans remain confident that the teams will do better in the next meeting, which is scheduled for September.
