City cycling in Heidelberg: Cycling for health and climate starts!

The countdown has begun: Only one week left until the start of city cycling in Heidelberg! It starts on June 23rd, 2025 and cycling enthusiasts in the city can collect their kilometers for the good climate and their own health until July 13th. The campaign not only promises a contribution to environmental protection, but also an entertaining sense of community among the participants.

City cycling is aimed at everyone who lives, works or belongs to a club in Heidelberg, as well as schoolchildren. Registration is quick and easy online; you can join existing teams or even start your own team. Regardless of whether you cycle to work, to school or on a shopping trip – every route you travel counts and can be recorded manually or via the practical city cycling app. Particularly interesting: When traveling on cargo bikes, the kilometers count even more if people are taken along!

A look at motivation

But why should you take part in city cycling? According to Umweltbundesamt, it is not just about being active in everyday life, but also about the important promotion of sustainable mobility. The benefits of cycling are not only obvious, such as fresh air and exercise, but also include flexible mobility without traffic jams and searching for a parking space.

To further motivate the participants, there are also prizes: the best schools in the city area can look forward to prize money of 200 euros, with the prize presentation taking place on July 22nd in the Heidelberg town hall. The whole thing is not just a sporting event, but also an important symbol of climate protection, supported by the Climate Alliance, which is organizing the campaign nationwide.

A common goal

Heidelberg is part of a larger community that has been taking part in the international competition since 2008. Last year, around 300,000 people from almost 900 communities cycled and logged an incredible 60 million kilometers. In the Lower Saxony region, cities like Nordstemmen have already taken part in such campaigns several times. There, for example, in a campaign from 2022, a similar goal was pursued: to focus on sustainable mobility and climate protection. Under the leadership of the mayor of the municipality, Nicole Dombrowski, there was also great enthusiasm for cycling.

All information and the registration form for Heidelberg can be found on the Stadtradeln website. Anyone who is looking forward to promoting healthy and environmentally friendly mobility and collecting their own kilometers at the same time should not miss out! If you have any questions, there is also an FAQ section that clarifies common concerns.

Overall, city cycling is a wonderful way to motivate yourself to cycle while at the same time making a valuable contribution to the environment. So, get on your bike and off you go – so that Heidelberg becomes a little greener too!
