Series of burglaries in the Ludwigsburg district: maximum punishment for the perpetrators!
In a sensational trial, the Heilbronn regional court sentenced three men to long prison terms for an extensive series of burglaries in the Ludwigsburg and Heilbronn districts. The defendants, who formed a gang in the fall of 2023, were responsible for numerous break-ins in 38 apartments.
The verdicts speak volumes: The 30-year-old must be behind bars for 6 years and 9 months after he committed a total of 30 cases of serious gang theft and residential burglary. His 26-year-old accomplice received 5 years and 9 months in prison for 14 crimes, while the 50-year-old was sentenced to 6.5 years for 19 burglaries. The damage balance is impressive - the total damage amounts to around 52,500 euros, while the loot was worth over 225,000 euros, often including valuable pieces of jewelry and coins. For example, jewelry and coins worth 50,000 euros were stolen in Pleidelsheim.
Short but intensive procedure
The whole process only took 6 days of meetings, which was ten weeks less than originally planned. This was primarily due to the defendants' early confessions. The judge highlighted the men's remorse and apologies during the sentencing. It is interesting to note that the defendants had no previous convictions, which is rare in such cases.
The burglars' methods were very simple: they pried open windows and doors to get into the apartments. The court found that the seriousness of the loot and the psychological consequences for those injured spoke against the men. A break-in can not only cause material damage, but can also severely impact the sense of security and privacy of those affected. This phenomenon is supported by crime statistics in Germany: in 2023 there were around 119,000 residential burglaries, with more than 77,800 cases classified as residential burglary theft.
The far-reaching consequences of burglaries
House burglary, according to Section 244 of the Criminal Code, refers to the unauthorized entry into a living space with the intent to steal. These break-ins are often violent, which can result not only in material losses but also in lasting psychological damage to the victims. The number of burglaries has increased again after the corona pandemic and has reached the highest level since 2019, even if the numbers are still over 50% lower than in 2015.
When looking at the geographical distribution, it becomes clear that the risk of becoming a victim of a burglary is particularly high in urban federal states such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg. Mülheim an der Ruhr recorded the highest burglary rate in 2023 with 283 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Fürth, on the other hand, reported the lowest rate with only 33 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The overall clearance rate for residential burglaries is only 14.9%, while the clearance rate for all crimes in Germany is 58.4%. The proportion of foreign suspects in the solved cases has reached a high of 42.9% - a topic that has repeatedly caused debate in recent years.
The convictions in this trial are a clear step towards addressing the burglary problem in our society. It remains to be hoped that further steps will follow to protect citizens and strengthen the feeling of security in the affected regions.
