Attention bathers! These rules apply on Lake Constance in the hot summer of 2025!

The coming days promise swimming fun: at the weekend the temperatures on Lake Constance are expected to rise to up to 37 degrees. Meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) announce “three days of pure sunshine,” attracting numerous water sports enthusiasts and sun worshipers to the idyllic shores. But despite the tempting weather, there are some important rules that bathers should follow to ensure a carefree stay.

In general, the water is open to bathers almost everywhere on Lake Constance - although with certain restrictions. In any case, it is important to know that private areas and places where swimming is prohibited should be taboo. In particular, there is a ban on swimming in harbor entrances or at passenger ship landing points within a radius of 100 meters. If you want to jump into the cool water in the next few days, you should be particularly careful.

Bioburden: A serious risk

Water quality is also particularly relevant. In the past, an alarming germ load of almost 35,000 E-Coli bacteria per 100 milliliters was found at the Eriskirch lido - a total exceedance of the limit of 1,800 bacteria. The enterococci levels were also more than six times the limit permitted by the EU. In the past there was like on August 30, 2023 there was even a ban on swimming, which was signaled with a red flag. This is a serious problem that has arisen again and again in recent years, especially after heavy rain, as Staatsanzeiger reports.

However, bathing fun can pose a health risk, especially in the municipal beaches in Eriskirch and Langenargen, where such critical values have existed for years. It is precisely for this reason that the water quality in the Lake Constance district is checked regularly—every 14 days, regardless of the weather conditions. The controls are important to minimize health risks and ensure the safety of bathers.

The invisible dangers

Another aspect that should not be underestimated are the antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can occur in contaminated bathing water. These bacteria can enter waterways through wastewater or agricultural runoff. While the likelihood of these bacteria causing serious infections is thought to be low, health surveillance still ensures that every bather is well informed. In particular, people with injuries or weakened immune systems should be particularly careful when it comes to bathing as they are at higher risk of becoming infected. This is also highlighted by the [LGL](https://www.lgl.bayern.de/gesundheit/hygiene/wasserhygiene/badeseen/antibiotika Resistant_bacterialen_in_badegewaessern.htm).

To ensure that you can make the best possible use of the upcoming hot weekend, bathers are asked to find out about the current water quality values. A look at the valid bathing water map is very important.

In summary, it remains to be said: Lake Constance invites you to swim with the best weather, but every water person should keep an eye on the rules and the water quality. So nothing stands in the way of a refreshing stay on the shore.
