DRK is planning a new rescue center for 4.5 million euros in Konstanz!
The district association of the German Red Cross (DRK) in Konstanz is planning to build a new center that will cost an estimated 4.5 million euros. The headquarters at Mainaustraße 29 is currently in dire need of renovation and has become too small over the years. The necessary plans were presented by DRK Chairman Zeno Danner, Managing Director Timo Petersen and Mayor Ulrich Burchardt. A very clear advantage of the new construction project is the intended more comprehensive supply of the population in the region, which could be accompanied by the relocation of the Malteser guard. The new location will be built directly next to the Konstanz Clinic on a green area between the parking lot and the clinic entrance, which is viewed by everyone involved as an optimal location. It offers numerous synergies and saves valuable time during operations.
The property belongs to the city of Konstanz, and the lease agreements between the DRK and the city are already dry. The building decision was agreed and an architect was commissioned. The planned start of construction is scheduled for spring 2026. In addition, applications for funding were submitted to the state of Baden-Württemberg in order to be able to reduce around two thirds of the costs. This modernization of the emergency services is urgently needed because the current teaching building is now around 150 years old and simply does not offer enough space for the growing district association.
Necessary improvements in emergency services
In Germany, the number of operations in the rescue service has increased significantly, which is not only due to an increasing number of operations, but also to a declared increase in personnel. The proportion of female emergency services is currently around 30 percent. Technical developments and the space required for larger vehicles make it necessary to build or expand many rescue stations. Numerous existing guards no longer meet the safety and hygiene requirements. As a result, you often have to either remodel or even build a new one.
In this context, District President Bärbel Schäfer (Greens) emphasized the importance of the current expansion measures and underlined the need for funding to ensure the effectiveness of the emergency services in the administrative district. The Baden DRK regional association received 1.5 million euros to build a new rescue station in Singen. The total costs of the new building in Singen are 4.5 million euros. This new rescue station will offer a generous floor space of 3,313 square meters, with a ground floor for vehicles and an upper floor for administration and sanitary rooms. Here too it was necessary for the DRK district association to bear part of the construction costs itself. A legal dispute over the amount of state subsidies caused additional confusion before financing could finally be secured.
The DRK district association in Konstanz is facing major changes that will not only lead to an improvement in the working environment for the 40 employees in the current building, but will also improve the emergency services in the region in the long term. The path to a modern and effective operational organization has been paved, even if the future use of the old DRK building remains uncertain. Mayor Burchardt is already showing interest in the future use of the old location.
The continuous improvement of working conditions for emergency services personnel is not only helpful, but necessary in order to meet the demands of modern times. The planned measures in Konstanz are an important step in this direction and will hopefully have a positive influence on the entire region.
