Fire department operation in Ludwigshafen: BASF reports product leak!
Today, August 10, 2025, the Ludwigshafen fire department was informed at 7:23 a.m. by the BASF factory fire department of a product leak at the factory. The first reports from the public about noticeable smells in the area were quickly reported, which led to the emergency services being quickly alerted. Two measuring vehicles from the professional fire department were immediately sent to the affected parts of the city to investigate the situation and carry out a quick risk assessment. The emergency services then carried out substance research and a substance dispersion calculation in order to enable a clear assessment of the danger.
The population was promptly informed to close windows and doors and stay indoors in order to minimize possible health risks. Thanks to the professional cooperation between the fire department and the BASF fire department, the warning was later downgraded, which ultimately brought calm among the residents. A total of 15 emergency services and four vehicles from the professional fire department were on duty. During this operational phase, in which quick action was required, the fire brigade also received another mission in the city, which presented the operations management with particular challenges.
Safety precautions and emergency management
The incident in Ludwigshafen highlights the important role of emergency organizations in companies. The Chemical Industry Association (VCI) recently published an updated guide on “Emergency Management – Hazard Prevention”, which was developed specifically for small and medium-sized chemical and pharmaceutical companies. This offers valuable guidance for optimizing existing emergency organizations. It includes, among other things, the necessary steps to ensure public safety and legal obligations.
Effective emergency management includes six priorities for action, which are set out in a clear structure:
- Leben retten
- Weitere Gefahren für Menschen und Umwelt verhindern
- Weitere Schäden vermeiden
- Gesetzliche Verpflichtungen erfüllen
- Gesellschaftliche Erwartungen erfüllen
- Produktionsausfälle minimieren
In order to effectively implement these priorities, close cooperation between company fire departments and public fire departments is essential. Expert advisors from various areas, such as environmental protection and emergency pastoral care, can be called in to support the operations management in order to make the measures even more coordinated.
This morning, the emergency services in Ludwigshafen once again demonstrated that they can act quickly and decisively in emergencies.
