VCO ladies still pointless: dramatic defeat against Potsdam II!
There was an exciting, albeit challenging, encounter yesterday in the Schlosswallhalle in Osnabrück. The women of the Osnabrück Volleyball Club (VCO) had to admit defeat to SC Potsdam II 1:3. The game lasted a total of 108 minutes and offered the spectators thrilling rallies and some controversial decisions by the referees, which obviously influenced the course of the game. Particularly in the first set, there were doubts about the fairness of the decisions, which changed the dynamics on the field. But the VCO also showed bright spots: Libera Dina Dell was awarded the MVP silver medal for her outstanding performance, a bright spot in an overall bleak match.
As VCO coach Gunnar Kraus explained after the game, there were two strong sets, but a clear decline in the third and fourth sections. While the Osnabrück women were able to equalize in the second set, a 0:5 run broke the momentum in the third set, and the VCO women had to accept a clear 11:25 lead in the fourth set a little later. Such a result was particularly bitter for the girls after two weekends without games and the hope of getting their first points of the season. Now the focus is on the next game against BSV Ostbevern, which takes place on November 1st at 7 p.m.

Volleyball on the rise
This setback could not tell the entire story of volleyball in Germany. On the contrary, sport is experiencing a steady upswing in this country. The German Volleyball Association reported around 436,000 members in 2024 - a remarkable increase of over 26,000 members compared to the previous year. These figures show that volleyball is becoming more and more popular, both as a recreational and competitive sport. An exciting phenomenon is that there are more female members (222,170) than male members (214,100) in Germany. This imbalance shows the strong appeal of sport to women and girls.
Volleyball is particularly popular among the younger generations. Over 100,000 students took part in the “Youth training for the Olympics” competition in the 2023/24 school year - a sign that sport can boom not only at the professional level, but also at the amateur level. It remains to be seen whether the VCO fighters can improve their performance in the coming games to seriously challenge the competition in the league.
