30 years of Jewish life in Lörrach: celebration and change in the community

In Lörrach, the Jewish Community is facing a very special anniversary: it is celebrating its 30th anniversary. This anniversary falls just one week after November 9th, the commemoration of the Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938. An occasion that not only invites celebration, but also reflection on the history and present of Jewish life in this place.

The community has around 500 members and offers a rich program that enables a normal everyday life with many encounters and events. The unified community, which integrates both traditional and open approaches, strives to promote a heterogeneous membership in which everyone can feel comfortable. The offerings include senior programs, children's and youth clubs, a painting school, social advice and cultural events that are also open to guests - although registration is required for security reasons.

Education and integration

An important part of the community are the Torah lessons for Jewish children in the synagogue as well as the state religious instruction offered at the Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium. These educational opportunities help children to better understand their roots and traditions. Meanwhile, the importance of German courses within the community has decreased somewhat, which reflects the integration work. Many members come from the former Soviet Union and have the opportunity to live a Jewish everyday life here.

The supply of kosher food is also of great importance to the community. Unfortunately, fresh kosher bread is no longer available in Lörrach, but the community organizes bulk orders and shopping in the nearby cities of Basel, Saint-Louis and Strasbourg to meet the need.

Career opportunities for young people

This combination of tradition and progress shows that the Israelite Community in Lörrach not only represents an important part of cultural life, but also serves as a birthplace of new career opportunities for the young generation.

Looking into the future

With its diverse offerings, the community is a place for learning and togetherness. The members and those responsible show that Jewish life in Lörrach is lively and dynamic. Whether through cultural events or educational offerings, the way for harmonious coexistence is paved here. Current challenges, such as the lack of kosher food and the decline in German courses, are being actively addressed and offer scope for future developments.

We can look forward to the next 30 years of the Jewish Community in Lörrach!
