Duisburg's football hero Bernard Dietz named honorary captain!

Yesterday, November 6th, 2025, a lot happened in football at MSV Duisburg. The club regained the lead in the 3rd league. After an exciting top game against VfL Osnabrück that ended 0-0, Duisburg can now look forward to a successful return to the top. Another lucky factor was the simultaneous defeat of Energie Cottbus against TSV 1860 Munich. This means that Duisburg and Cottbus are now tied at the top of the table. MSV will try to consolidate its position in a duel against Waldhof Mannheim on Friday, November 7th. Meanwhile, Waldhof finds itself in the middle of the table and is seven points behind the two leaders.

A look at history shows that the last meetings between Duisburg and Mannheim in the 2023/24 season ended in a draw, before Waldhof won 3-1 against the Zebras in the previous two years. The last win for Duisburg against Mannheim was a long time ago - on November 17, 2002, Marius Ebbers secured the success with two goals.

Honor for Bernard Dietz

The half-time break of the upcoming game will also be exciting, when Mayor Sören Link will honor Bernard Dietz. The former captain of the German national football team received the honorary captaincy award in Frankfurt on the same day. This means he belongs to an exclusive circle of six former DFB team captains who have received this honor. The appointment was decided unanimously at the 45th Ordinary DFB Bundestag. Until his appointment, Dietz, also known as “Ennatz”, was the only captain of the German national team to win a title without being named honorary captain.

Bernard Dietz played a total of 53 international matches from 1974 to 1981 and led the team to the European Championship title in Italy in 1980. During the ceremony, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf praised Dietz's sporting achievements and his influence on football in Germany. With this honor, all captains of the German men's national team who have won a title have now also become honorary captains.

The appointment of Bernard Dietz was requested by the MSV board and the Lower Rhine Football Association, and both MSV President Christian Schuhehagen and Mayor Sören Link expressed themselves positively about this decision. The city of Duisburg has not only honored a deserving athlete, but also an important ambassador for football.

MSV Duisburg can therefore not only look forward to sporting success, but also to the recognition of one of its most legendary players, who will go down in history for his contributions to football in Germany.
