There is a risk of mega traffic jams: drivers should avoid this holiday weekend!

The summer holidays are beginning in Germany - a time that not only means a happy escape from everyday school life for the majority of students, but also represents a challenge on the roads for us drivers. This weekend, specifically from June 28th to August 1st, the first holiday start times for some federal states and thus increased traffic volumes are in the air. The federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia in particular are starting the university and could cause a lot of traffic jams. The first week of August promises to be particularly prone to traffic jams, as many drivers from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg will disrupt the traffic. Chip.de reports.

In the entire period from August 1st to 10th, all federal states have holidays - and this will certainly be reflected in the traffic density. Even if traffic clubs such as ADAC and ACE note that “chaotic conditions” are not to be expected, you should be prepared for small traffic jams and slow-moving traffic, especially on arterial roads. The forecast for Sunday shows slightly increased traffic volumes on the main travel routes, especially on the motorways, but traffic jams are expected to occur in exceptional cases. Geo.de also warns of traffic jams.

Routes with traffic jam risk

Increased traffic volumes are expected on the following routes in particular:

  • A 1: Lübeck – Hamburg – Bremen – Dortmund – Köln
  • A 3: Köln – Frankfurt/Main – Würzburg – Nürnberg – Passau
  • A 5: Frankfurt/Main – Karlsruhe – Basel
  • A 7: Flensburg – Hamburg – Hannover – Würzburg
  • A 9: Berlin – Leipzig – Nürnberg – München

Particular attention should also be paid to the numerous construction sites, which make up around 1,200 in Germany and can also cause long delays. In addition to sporadic closures, full closures have been announced on important routes - such as the A3 and A8 - which could potentially disrupt travel plans. ADAC informed about specific construction sites:

  • A2: Magdeburg – Braunschweig (29. Juni, 7-10 Uhr)
  • A3: Nürnberg – Würzburg (28. Juni, 21 Uhr bis 29. Juni, 5 Uhr)
  • A8: Salzburg Richtung München (29. Juni, 20 Uhr bis 30. Juni, 5 Uhr)

Excursion traffic and border controls

Nice weather and the approaching weekend attract many day trippers onto the streets. There will also be a lot going on far away, in countries like Austria and Switzerland. High traffic volumes were expected, particularly on the Brenner route and the Gotthard motorway. Border controls at the German border could also lead to waiting times, especially at well-known crossings such as Suben and Walserberg. So preparations are in order!

In summary, we can say that drivers are well advised to plan their journey carefully and possibly avoid traffic jams if possible. Don't let yourself be put off, even if the streets are full - with a little patience, every goal can be achieved! Check current traffic reports and be well prepared for your journey!
