Metzingen's bright pink flamingo house: trend or color disaster?
In Metzingen, a very special construction project caused a stir and was a topic of conversation among the residents. The newly built residential building, also known as the “Flamingo House,” shines in a striking bright pink color that elicited various reactions. Builder Stefan Köhler, who made this unconventional color choice, wants to create something extraordinary with the house. “Pink reminds me of vacation and flamingos,” explains Köhler, which contributes to the name of the house. But as with many courageous decisions, there are different opinions here too.
Originally, the bright walls were met with mixed reviews. While some neighbors find the color inappropriate or even “terrible,” a growing number of visitors find the Flamingo House entertaining and appealing. Christoph Röseler, an intrigued visitor, emphasizes that it is a real eye-catcher. Despite the critical voices, Köhler remains calm and notes the diversity of opinions that makes it an exciting part of urban life.
Sustainability and modern architecture
The Flamingo House is special not only because of its choice of colors, but also because of its construction. This detached apartment building was designed by MEYER ARCHITEKTEN and includes seven residential units spread over four floors. In the old town of Metzingen, the building was constructed using a hybrid construction method - the reinforced concrete skeleton is supplemented with high insulation and wooden frame external walls, which represents a sustainable approach. Demolition of existing buildings was necessary because the building structure was poor, and now residents and visitors can benefit from green steel balconies and flexible floor plans.
The building extends over a maximum area of approximately 12 m × 30 m with a height of approximately 9.10 m. The total gross floor area is 1,370 m². In the Metzingen city administration, the final design of the Flamingo House is celebrated as an “eye-catcher” thanks to its clear, lively color scheme and innovative architectural approach. Sustainability also played an important role in the planning of the building, which meant that materials were carefully selected.
Colors and their influence on architecture
As architectural trends show, colors play a crucial role. They not only influence the aesthetics, but also the well-being of the users. Bright colors, like the striking pink of the Flamingo House, appeal to emotions and can shape the atmosphere of a room. The use of color in urban spaces is now seen as important for connecting materials and expressing identity, which is also evident in the creative approach to the Flamingo House. This not only emphasizes contrasts and possible combinations, but also shows how current color trends can convey social and cultural messages.
A neighbor has also set up a “flamingo apartment” in the house, with the help of an interior designer. Here, the creative and inspiring use of color is also visible within the apartments, which rounds off the overall picture of the Flamingo House and shows how colors can act as a unifying element in architecture. This project demonstrates that bold color designs in architecture are not only possible, but also create invigorating aspects of the urban environment.
