Fewer motorcycle accidents in Baden-Württemberg – but 67 deaths in 2025!

There are interesting developments in Baden-Württemberg in this year's motorcycle season. While the police recorded an overall decrease in motorcycle accidents by 3.1 percent to 4,050, the number of fatal accidents increased. Between March and October 2025, 67 motorcyclists lost their lives, four more than the year before. In the 2017 season there were still over 100 deaths, which shows that although the situation has improved, there is still a need for action. This is reported by the daily news.

However, safety management also has its downsides: almost two thirds of fatal accidents were caused by the drivers themselves, with excessive speeds, especially in winding and wet sections, being identified as the main cause. Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) therefore called for motorcyclists to be made more aware of the dangers of speeding and emphasized the need for preventative measures.

Increased controls and measures

As part of these efforts, police carried out increased checks last season. Over 16,300 motorcyclists were checked in around 1,700 operations and more than 4,700 violations were recorded, including speeding and technical manipulation. This shows that the police take the issue of safety seriously and are actively working on solutions to reduce the risk of accidents.

The numbers speak for themselves: 3,311 people were injured, 883 of them seriously, which corresponds to a decrease of around 11 percent compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the risk for motorcyclists remains high; Around 20 percent of all traffic fatalities in Germany are road users cycling, and the risk of an accident is four times higher for them than for drivers, according to data from ADAC.

Causes of accidents and preventive measures

The ADAC Accident Research Center has been analyzing the causes of serious traffic accidents since 2005 in order to develop preventive measures and avoid accidents. In addition to speeding, solo accidents and collisions with cars are common causes of accidents. Weather conditions, particularly wet and slippery roads, also play a major role in the frequency of accidents.

Another problem is driver distraction and fatigue. Over 10 percent of accidents outside of urban areas can be attributed to this. Country roads are particularly dangerous; Here, 57 percent of those killed and 39 percent of those seriously injured lose their lives. The ADAC also continually examines new technologies that can contribute to increasing safety, such as the introduction of emergency braking assistants.

Safety on the roads remains a central issue for all motorcyclists. The combination of prevention, monitoring and effective educational measures is crucial to ensure the safety of all road users.
