Huge drug raid: 13.5 tons of cocaine seized off Panama!

The news is making waves: Panama's security forces have intercepted a drug boat in the Pacific with around 13.5 tons of cocaine. This significant operation took place near the island of San José and is the largest drug seizure off the coast of Panama since 2007, when 19 tons of cocaine were seized. Ten people on board the tug were arrested while the crew attempted to resist and evade capture. The boat was traveling north on an unusual sea route, presumably with the aim of bringing the drugs to another Central American country or Mexico. These events underscore the ongoing challenge of drug smuggling in the region, marked in recent weeks by increased activity by US forces targeting drug-laden boats in the Caribbean and Pacific.

As PZ News reports, there have already been numerous deaths in connection with these operations as international efforts against drug trafficking intensify.

Global drug problem

Statista, which also indicate that most users prefer cannabis, followed by opioids, the prevalence of which has almost doubled.

The figures clearly show that there are challenging developments when it comes to drug trafficking and drug consumption not only in Panama, but also worldwide. The situation is particularly dire for injecting drug users, around half of whom are linked to HIV. This dramatic situation requires global cooperation and the implementation of effective strategies to combat drug trafficking.

Solutions and local initiatives

Given these developments, it is also important not to lose sight of local initiatives. Events like the **20. Congreso Estatal de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación**, taking place on October 15, 2025 in Morelia, Michoacán, demonstrate the commitment of science and education to find solutions to complex problems such as the drug crisis. ITESP students present their work there and thus contribute to education and awareness Tecpurandiro.

Although the challenges are great, such events bring hope that education and science can make a meaningful contribution to solving global problems.

The situation remains tense and all eyes are on upcoming actions and international cooperation to more effectively address drug trafficking and its devastating consequences.
