Ravensburg district cycles 2.5 million kilometers for climate protection!

In the period from June 28th to July 18th, 2025, cyclists in the Ravensburg district covered a remarkable 2.5 million kilometers. This outstanding achievement is part of the international cycling competition CITY CYCLING, which is supported by over 10,700 active participants from the region. The climate alliance counts the total number of avoided CO2 emissions at an impressive 415 tons, while the challenge is not only intended to encourage a healthy lifestyle, but also strengthen the team spirit of citizens would like.

The initiative is aimed at everyone – from citizens to employees to students and clubs – and aims to promote sustainable mobility. The Ravensburg district has secured third place in Baden-Württemberg among municipalities with 100,000 to 499,000 inhabitants. Freiburg is at the top, followed by Ortenaukreis.

Hard-working cyclists and outstanding successes

On closer inspection, the rankings of the participating cities in the district show interesting results. With the most kilometers covered, the municipality of Altshausen took the lead among municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants in all of Germany. The city of Ravensburg is a real cycling power in the district, with the most hard-working cyclists covering almost 488,000 km. They are followed by the municipality of Altshausen with around 271,000 km and the city of Leutkirch with around 218,000 km.

The campaign is rounded off by attractive achievements on an individual level: The most successful company, MI-KA Sports, cycled around 83,500 km, while the most active school, the Kißlegg secondary school, was at the top of its category with almost 54,000 km.

Focus on promoting and sustainable mobility

But why do you take part in such a cycling competition? The advantages are clear: cycling provides fresh air, exercise and a lot of fun. At the same time, it helps to avoid traffic jams and searching for a parking space. As the Umweltbundesamt emphasizes, sufficient cycling infrastructure is essential to promote cycling in the long term. Local politicians are also called upon to work together to create better infrastructure that makes it easier to switch to cycling.

CITY CYCLING, organized by the Climate Alliance since 2008, is captivating more and more people every year. Last year, for example, around 300,000 people from almost 900 municipalities took part and together they cycled almost 60 million kilometers - a remarkable figure!
