Altdorfer Wald wind farm: 28 wind turbines for a rapid energy transition!

Something exciting is happening in the idyllic Altdorf Forest in the Ravensburg district: in the near future, 28 wind turbines could shape the landscape there. The project, under the responsibility of Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) and iTerra Energy, submitted its application for approval to the Ravensburg district office on June 30, 2025. This all happens as part of the accelerated approval process in accordance with Section 6 WindBG. The approval authority now has the task of deciding whether the wind farm receives the green light or whether adjustments are still necessary, as ulm-news.de reports.

The planning of the wind farm is particularly important, which is described by Frank Sauvigny, the managing director of Altdorfer Wald GmbH, as a “park layout that is permissible under planning law”. Despite the positive development, there is resistance from the surrounding communities, especially in Vogt. Mayor Schäfer of the municipality of Bergatreute made it clear that he finds the arrangement of the wind turbines in the Bolanden district problematic and is considering taking legal action. He also criticized the dialogue group that was supposed to accompany the project as a “farce”.

A wind farm with power

Originally, 39 wind turbines were planned, but 11 systems had to be canceled for species protection reasons. This means that the Altdorfer Forest will be the largest wind farm in Baden-Württemberg with 28 planned wind turbines. The wind turbine from the manufacturer Nordex that will be used here has a nominal output of 6.8 MW and reaches a total height of 266 meters. The total output of the wind farm could be up to 190 MW, providing enough electricity for around 100,000 households in the region, as schwaebische.de highlights.

The plan is to build the first turbines between 2027 and 2028 and put the wind farm into operation in 2029. This could make a decisive contribution to independent energy supplies and climate-neutral energy production in the region.

Regulatory framework and transparency

The approval of wind power projects is generally carried out in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG), which is intended to ensure that no harmful environmental impacts arise and that all relevant public law concerns are taken into account. As fachagentur-wind-solar.de emphasizes, the applicant generally has a legal right to approval provided all requirements are met.

Once the approval authority has determined that the application is complete, formal public participation is initiated. The project sponsors rely on transparent information offerings for the affected residents. A two-day information event took place in May to involve the public at an early stage and to inform them about the progress of the project planning.

Citizens' concerns are taken seriously, and although not all voices are in agreement, the hope remains that harmonious coexistence can be achieved through dialogue and open communication. It will be interesting to see how the approval process progresses and whether the windy plans in the Altdorfer Forest will soon become reality.
