250 kg aerial bomb defused in Böblingen – massive closures lifted!
On July 3, 2025, the time had come again: a 250 kg aerial bomb from the Second World War was discovered on a construction site on the A81, near the Böblingen/Sindelfingen junction. The unpleasant discovery took place on Thursday afternoon. But don't panic! Late in the evening, the bomb was successfully defused by the explosive ordnance disposal service, which was reported by the ZVW reported in detail.
Overall, a safety zone with a radius of 400 meters was created. The city of Böblingen reported that there was no danger to residents or traffic until it was defused. Around 500 people, including residents, hotel guests and event participants, had to leave their homes and accommodations during this time. The safety of the residents was ensured by the fire department and civil protection, who monitored the area with drones throughout the entire process.
The smooth defusing process
According to Böblingen's mayor Stefan Belz, the defusing went extremely smoothly, which earned the emergency services great praise. Before the actual defusing, both S-Bahn, regional and long-distance traffic were stopped. The A81 motorway and all access roads were also temporarily closed during the mitigation measures.
Particularly noteworthy was the extensive evacuation of the surrounding area, which included parts of the Böblingen airfield, Motor World and the Wildermuth barracks. The streets within a 400-meter radius were temporarily closed to bus and car traffic. This shows how seriously the authorities assess potential dangers and how important explosive ordnance disposal is in Germany.
Explosive ordnance disposal: An important topic
The importance of explosive ordnance disposal is a topic that is often discussed in Germany. Many people don't even know that it's not just about defusing bombs, but that it encompasses a wide range of tasks, ranging from historical exploration to risk assessment and the actual evacuation. During spatial exploration, archive materials and aerial photographs are evaluated in order to locate the locations of explosive remains. The defusing and removal of the found explosive ordnance is then carried out according to detailed plans and specifications. Everything is regulated by the “explosive ordnance regulations” of the individual federal states, such as Wikipedia explained.
In Böblingen, the rapid response of the emergency services was a prime example of how important civil measures for explosive ordnance disposal are for ensuring public safety. After the defusing, residents were finally able to return to their buildings, while the first streets and traffic routes were gradually reopened. Once again it has been shown that the right preparation and the right materials are crucial for a smooth process.
