Yesterday, a dramatic pile-up involving seven vehicles occurred on the busy Autobahn 5 near Sandhausen, in the Rhein-Neckar district. The A5, which is one of Germany's busiest highways and connects important metropolitan areas such as Rhine-Main and Rhine-Neckar, was closed in the direction of Karlsruhe for almost six hours. Unfortunately, this traffic jam is another example of the high traffic density, which often leads to accidents on this route, as Tag24 also reports.
The cause of the accident was a 57-year-old driver who noticed too late that the car in front of him was braking. As a result, he was involved in a chain reaction in which three vehicles in the middle of the column were pushed into each other by an impact. A 31-year-old driver tried to escape the situation and changed lanes, but hit the rear of the last car. The congestion and traffic information provided by the police and fire departments demonstrates the dangers of such maneuvers on congested highways.
Injuries and damage
Four people between the ages of 24 and 55 suffered minor injuries in the incident and had to be taken to hospital. Such a large number of injuries is of course unfortunate and shows once again how important it is to drive carefully on such busy roads. The damage to the vehicles amounts to around 96,000 euros - another economic misfortune for those involved.
The events on the A5 are not uncommon. The high traffic density repeatedly causes rear-end collisions and full closures.
