Water withdrawal in the Rottweil district: There is a risk of a strict ban from Saturday!

The Rottweil district is facing a serious water crisis. From Saturday, July 5, 2025, the withdrawal of water from streams, rivers, ponds and ponds will be prohibited until further notice NRWZ reported. This decision is the result of the persistent drought that prevailed in the region in the spring of 2025, as well as the massive heat that pushed water levels to alarmingly low levels. According to the Rottweil district office, the situation is so critical that some bodies of water are already drying out completely.

The general order from the district office states that even small withdrawals of water - for example with buckets or watering cans - are no longer permitted without permission. Exceptions only apply to watering livestock if there is no connection to the public water supply. The aim of this measure is to protect existing water supplies and avoid aggravation of the situation, explains the district office.

A look at the past few months shows that the spring months from February to April were particularly dry in Rottweil. The precipitation was well below the long-term average: April only brought about 40 percent of the usual precipitation, while the March in Baden-Württemberg recorded only 39 percent of the average for the years 1961 to 1990. Therefore, the district office's call to reduce all water use, especially from surface waters, is urgent.

Consequences of drought

The ongoing drought not only has an impact on the water level, but also on the flora and fauna in and around the waters. At the same time, rising water temperatures and falling water levels are perceived as a serious threat, as are the Rottweil district forewarned. These conditions put a lot of strain on fish, amphibians and other aquatic creatures. The medium-term forecasts in particular do not indicate any easing of rainfall.

The high temperatures combined with a lack of water make it difficult for wildlife to find suitable habitats. Nature is suffering, and this is reflected in the diversity of species, which is increasingly declining. It is to be expected that without appropriate measures, further bodies of water will dry out.

Climate change and water availability

The project provides a scientific background to this problem Federal Environment Agency. This deals with the effects of drought and drought on water availability in Germany. The aim is to analyze the current situation with regard to water supply, soil water balance and groundwater availability and to predict future developments under climate change conditions.

The water shortage is not just a local problem, but a symptom of global climate change, which is reflected in increasingly extreme weather phenomena and long periods of drought. These developments must be taken seriously in order to avoid usage conflicts in the future.

Overall, it can be said that the conscious use of water will be more important than ever in the coming weeks and months. Anyone who is in the Rottweil district should take the current challenges into account and, if possible, avoid withdrawing water in order to conserve the remaining water supplies. Violations of the ban could be punished with high fines of up to 100,000 euros - a reminder to the communities to behave responsibly.
