Potsdam Royals storm into the semi-finals: 42:25 against Unicorns!
The Potsdam Royals have booked their ticket to the semi-finals of the GFL playoffs with an impressive 42:25 win against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. This is the fifth time in a row that the Royals are playing in this crucial phase for the German championship. From the start, however, the Royals were faced with an 8-0 deficit, which they quickly erased with a 50-yard pass from quarterback Xeaiver Bullock to Milan Spiller. And like that Märkische Allgemeine Reportedly, the first quarter was extremely exciting, as it ended with the Royals leading 14-8.
After the game, head coach Michael Vogt was not only satisfied with his team's performance, but also expressed concern about the injury situation. Club president Jens-Torsten Müller praised the team's effectiveness, especially in defense, and showed respect for their upcoming opponents, the Munich Cowboys, who in turn defeated the Berlin Rebels 44:31 in the quarterfinals. In the next round, the Royals will meet the Cowboys next Saturday at 3 p.m. in the “Luftschiffhafen” stadium.
A game full of ups and downs
The game was characterized by constant twists and turns. After Malik Flowers' equalizer, the Royals increased the score to 26:11 in the second quarter. High scores also dominated, not least thanks to the strong performance of Bullock and Spiller. The third quarter went without points, so both teams went into the final quarter focused. Here the Unicorns shortened the lead to 26:17 before the Royals were able to pull ahead to 42:17 thanks to two more touchdowns from Spiller. In the end, the Unicorns managed to reduce the deficit to 42:25, but this no longer threatened the result.
The Royals, who have won the last four games against Schwäbisch Hall, also owe their success to the closed defense and the clever play of their quarterback. In the current season, the Unicorns, who had taken first place in the ERIMA GFL South since 2011, only finished fourth this year.
Outlook for the playoffs
If you look at the entire GFL playoffs, the Royals have now proven that they can hold their own against potent opponents. The semi-final against the Munich Cowboys will be a real test, as the team from Munich presents itself as a serious challenger and is prepared for the next game with fighting spirit. The GFL has the potential to deliver exciting encounters in the coming weeks. The anticipation for the semi-finals is already noticeable.
For the Royals, the road to the GFL Bowl, which takes place on October 11th in the Rudolf Harbig Stadium in Dresden, is far from over. But what is certain is that the Potsdam Royals players will give everything to bring the “Beule” trophy, which has been contested since 1979, to Potsdam.
