Stumbling blocks in Künzelsau: Cleaning campaign for memories!
The next commemorative events are coming up in Künzelsau to support the awareness-raising Stolpersteine project. Between 2015 and 2020, a total of 71 stumbling blocks were laid here, 70 of which commemorate Jewish fellow citizens. A special stone, however, is dedicated to a political resistance fighter, while another stumbling block was set by a citizen in 2007 for his uncle, a victim of the euthanasia murders. Stumbling blocks are 10 cm large concrete cubes with brass plates on which the names and dates of life of the victims of National Socialist persecution are engraved, reports Wikipedia.
Parallel to the laying, the stumbling blocks are regularly cleaned, organized by schools, youth groups and sponsors. These actions are not only a gesture of remembrance, but also an opportunity for the community to actively participate in the culture of remembrance. The StadtHistory Künzelsau association has scheduled another cleaning campaign for Saturday, November 8th. From 2 p.m., interested citizens are invited to help out at the Old Town Hall.
Remembering and cleaning together
For the campaign on November 8th, the association is providing cleaning supplies and plans for the location of the stones. However, participants should bring rags and a small canister of water to ensure that all stones can be cleaned properly. The event is expected to take 1 to 2 hours and ends in the Stadtvilla 1897 of the Stadtgeschichte association, Stuttgarter Str. 17. Registration is necessary and can be easily done by email heinz-wilhelm.koch@web.de be made.
The stumbling blocks are part of a large art project launched by the German artist Gunter Demnig. It aims to integrate the memory of the victims of National Socialism into people's everyday lives. In total, more than 100,000 stumbling blocks had been laid in over 1,900 communities by June 2023; This project represents the largest decentralized monument in the world. Stumbling blocks, embedded in the sidewalk, are intended to be discovered by chance and encourage people to think about how stolpersteine.eu reported.
Remembering the past strengthens awareness of the values of our present. The upcoming cleaning campaign in Künzelsau offers citizens the opportunity to actively contribute to the culture of remembrance and become part of an important initiative that goes beyond local borders.
