Unicorns win the tournament: 50 points for Hörterich!

On July 7, 2025, the Cologne Unicorns experienced an exciting day at their last tournament, which brought with it some highs, but also a few lows. The first game against the Crailsheim Mad Dogs ended with 20:25 for the Unicorns. As unicorns.de reports, unnecessary penalties prevented the Unicorns from showing stability in defense and effectively stopping the opposing drives.

However, the Crailsheim Mad Dogs, a relatively new team founded in 2021, are showing strong in flag football. The club belongs to ESV Crailsheim 1957 e.V. and has now established itself in the midfield of the regional league with over 30 active members. Head coach Tom Nittel has a lot of experience as a former coach of the Crailsheim Titans and Hurricanes and contributes to the further development of the team, which also enjoys the support of experienced players from the Crailsheim Hurricanes and Titans. In their first year, the Mad Dogs have already participated in various tournaments and friendly games to further their development and cement their place in flag football, as can be read on flagfootball.rocks.

Strong comeback for the Unicorns

After the narrow defeat in the first game, the Unicorns managed to improve significantly in the second match against the Kornwestheim Cougars. Here they managed an impressive 39:18 and thus set a clear exclamation mark. The defense, led by Tim Göhner and Marco Grün, showed great performances, including some pass breakups. A special highlight was a touchdown by Luis Hörterich, which was scored after a tricky play by Jannick Göller.

The Unicorns were not only strong offensively, but were also able to shine in defense and turned it up against the Stuttgart Silver Arrows in their last game for fifth place. They won with an impressive 36:12. Luis Hörterich was particularly successful here and collected a total of 50 points in the tournament with his performances, throwing touchdown passes to Wolfgang Dedig and Felix Hell. Jannick Göller, Elena Birkigt and Felix Hell also had a lot of points in this game and contributed to the team's success.

Outlook and goals

After the games, head coach Sebastian Pollmann commented on the costly mistakes in the first match that put a strain on the team's defense. Nevertheless, the Unicorns are optimistic about the upcoming games. The next league tournament is next Sunday in Obersulm, where they will compete against the Treschklingen Hornets and Mad Dogs 2. The goal is clear: to build on the good performance and develop further without penalties and with team spirit.

Flag football, a low-contact version of American football, is becoming increasingly popular. This is also reflected in the successful participation of the national team, which recently won gold and bronze at the IFAF European Flag Football Championships 2023. Flag football will even be part of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which will give the sport in Germany an additional boost, as the AFVD reports.

The coming challenges are exciting – not just for the Unicorns, but for all flag football teams in Germany! The development of the Mad Dogs and the commitment of their players are also a positive development in the entire sport.
