Orchard harvest 2025: record quantities and endless queues in Mössingen!
This year the orchard harvest along the Albtrauf is running like clockwork. In Mössingen in particular, fruit growers can boast a remarkable harvest of apples, pears and plums. Compared to the previous year, the owners are pleased with a yield that is around a third higher, due to optimal conditions such as sufficient rain, magnificent flowers and the absence of frost. Such reports can be read in [Tagesschau](https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/regional/badenwuerttemberg/swr-stau-an-annahmestelle-moessingen-diese-menge-an-obst- Sprengen-alle-borne-100.html).
The picture that presents itself at the acceptance points is impressive. Long queues of several hundred meters stretch all the way to Gomaringen-Stockach, and some deadlines are already fully booked until the end of October. In Nehren, for example, the “Mostkutsche” is waiting for fruit to be delivered and has its hands full. The chairman of the Gomaringen fruit and horticultural association, Günter Letz, speaks of a “state of emergency”. Artistic photos and videos show the enormous queues of cars that are testing citizens' patience.
The record day in Gomaringen
A highlight of the season was the record day when an impressive 97.4 tons of apples were delivered in Gomaringen-Stockach in a single day. These massive quantities not only show that people are comfortable getting rid of their fruit, but also that they value it. Although so many give the fruit, there are also critical voices. Horst Hirning from Mössingen expressed concerns about the long waiting times and was concerned about the economic viability of the hobby.
However, the prices for orchards are in focus. The price for 100 kilos of apples is currently around 16 euros, a pricing that the chairman of the Mössingen orchard association, Hans Wener, considers acceptable. The initiative by Hochstamm Deutschland e.V. to collect producer prices is also considered important in order to create transparency and strengthen the orchard industry. In this context, Hochstamm Deutschland calls for prices for cider fruit to be entered in an online questionnaire in order to create a comprehensive picture and highlight positive examples.
Looking into the future
As is often the case in life, fruit growers are expecting a smaller harvest next year, because good harvests are often followed by less good ones, according to the experts. Nevertheless, the mood at the acceptance points apparently remains good. In Gomaringen, some citizens were even able to hand in their fruit before the official opening, which created a cheerful atmosphere. Despite the challenges, the operators of the collection points are optimistic about the future.
The good orchard fruit harvest and the committed help of many fruit growers show that the preservation of the cultivated landscape and the marketing of orchards go hand in hand. According to Destatis, the cultivated areas, which are also used for non-yielding young plants, are important in order to evaluate the yields sensibly and to recognize the great potential of orchards. When it comes to preserving this diversity, everyone involved is involved.
