B 29 renovation: full closure from August – This is what drivers need to know!
On August 4, 2025, the B 29 between Böbingen and the Iggingen junction in the Ostalbkreis will be closed for extensive renovation. The work, which is expected to last until September 7, 2025, is necessary to renew the asphalt surface layer and repair cracks and dents caused by the existing road damage. The entire project covers a distance of around three kilometers and is financed by the federal government with a total investment of around 960,000 euros. The Stuttgart Regional Council asks drivers to understand the disruptions during the construction period. A diversion of regional traffic will be set up: from Aalen towards Schwäbisch Gmünd via the L 1161, including Heubach and vice versa. Current information about the road construction site can be found on the website of the Baden-Württemberg Road Traffic Center, which also offers a free app called VerkehrsInfo BW.
As the responsible authority reports, this measure is part of a larger state program to renovate the transport infrastructure. In Baden-Württemberg, over 380 million euros will be invested in road maintenance in 2024 in order to improve safety and traffic flow. As part of this program, over 300 new maintenance measures are planned for federal and state roads across the country, including the rehabilitation of around 170 kilometers of roadways on federal highways.
BIM drone ensures innovative construction site documentation
New technologies are also being used as part of the extensive renovation work. On May 3, 2024, the official starting signal was given for the renovation of federal highway 29 between Urbach and Lorch, which is divided into four sections. A BIM (Building Information Modeling) drone was used for the first time and was put into operation by Ministerial Director Berthold Frieß and District President Susanne Bay. This drone is used for fully autonomous construction site documentation and helps to optimize the construction process, which should make the entire process a lot easier.
The renovation measure between Urbach and Lorch is expected to last until spring 2026 and involves total costs of around 22 million euros. Traffic will remain open in this section, but only one lane will be available in each direction. In addition, the maximum permissible speeds in the construction site area will be reduced and some junctions will have to be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of construction workers and road users.
Transport projects on German roads
Looking to the future, the Federal Ministry of Transport has identified 144 outstanding transport projects that are considered a priority. These measures are intended not only to halve the planning times for traffic routes, but also to eliminate traffic jams and bottlenecks that disrupt the flow of traffic. An approval acceleration law environment is provided in order to be able to make quick adjustments and thus do justice to the expected increase in transport traffic.
Forecasts are already warning of an increase in transport volumes on German roads, which could increase by 46 percent by 2051. This shows how important it is to get our transport routes in good shape in a timely and sustainable manner - and this is what the current renovation measures on the B 29 in Baden-Württemberg represent, as well as the continuous investments in the road network in the coming years.
