Students present MAN steel houses: exhibition from July 10th!

Starting tomorrow, July 10th, everything in the “Stube” of the Barfüsserkirche will revolve around architecture and cultural history. Students from the Augsburg University of Technology and the University of Stuttgart present interesting project results in an exciting exhibition.

Under the motto “Nobody cares – we do” four MAN steel houses that were produced in Augsburg between 1948 and 1953 will be discussed from July 10th to 27th. These unique buildings stand on the edge of the MAN company property and are part of a small series production that received less attention, but is all the more valuable for building history. The exhibition is supervised by a competent team: Bernhard Irmler and Stefan Schumacher from the THA as well as Reinhold Bauer and Thomas Schuetz from the University of Stuttgart.

Insights into the history of architecture

The MAN houses are not just simple buildings; They talk about the building culture of their time and the role that architecture plays in our society. Professor Irmler emphasizes that these houses corresponded to the standards of their era in terms of construction, even if aesthetic criticism was not lacking. A central goal of the exhibition is to introduce construction as a value category into the discussion on monument preservation and thus to arouse active interest in our architectural heritage.

The exhibition is the result of a DFG-funded project entitled “Fail successfully. On the importance of spin-offs for the construction industry at the end of high modernity”. The content was finalized at a workshop at the end of June, with a lot of input from guest critics, including Anja Runkel from the Technical University of Munich and Christina Selbach from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal.

Opening hours and participation

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, July 10th at 5 p.m. The doors will then be open on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This offers anyone interested in architecture the opportunity to delve into the subject matter and explore the structural and aesthetic aspects of MAN steel houses in more detail.

This exhibition is an example of how important architectural achievements of the post-war period are still significant. It also shows how architectural history not only reflects the past, but also reflects the cultural values and social practices of a society. So if you want to better understand the built environment, you definitely shouldn't miss this event.
