Tübingen is starting the heat transition with a new solar thermal system!

A new sun star has risen in Tübingen: Stadtwerke Tübingen (swt) put its newest outdoor solar thermal energy system into operation on October 31, 2024. This impressive facility covers 23,200 square meters, with 12,000 square meters reserved for modern vacuum tube collectors. This means it generates around six million kilowatt hours of climate-friendly district heating every year, which can replace around 700,000 liters of heating oil. Real progress on the way to climate neutrality in the city.

No stone was left unturned: the groundbreaking ceremony for the facility took place on May 3, 2024, and after five years of intensive planning and construction work, the facility has now officially been put into operation. A heat storage unit with a volume of 1,250 cubic meters complements the system and can serve as valuable network storage. This comprehensive project also receives funding of 5.77 million euros from the federal funding for efficient heating networks (BEW), which makes things even more interesting.

A step into the future of heat supply

The new project is part of Tübingen's comprehensive district heating transformation, a concept that aims to make the city greenhouse gas neutral by 2045. The municipal utilities are already planning the next big thing with a large heat pump at the Tübingen sewage treatment plant. The expansion of the heating network is not just a concern, but a necessity in order to connect new heat generation systems.

An important component of this transformation are the pipeline routes that have already been implemented, including a district heating pipeline under the Neckar. This shows that the Tübingen municipal utilities have a good knack for innovative solutions that not only benefit the environment, but also the citizens.

Funding opportunities for further projects

The Tübingen municipal utility company benefits from one of the four federal funding modules for efficient heating networks. This funding program supports transformation plans and feasibility studies for heat supply systems that cover more than 16 buildings or 100 residential units. It not only offers non-repayable grants of up to 50% of the eligible costs, but also various other funding offers for new construction and the transformation of existing infrastructure.

The funding program ensures that the conversion of existing heating network systems is pushed forward by 2045. Special attention is also given to individual measures such as solar thermal systems, heat pumps and biomass boilers, which are intended to be incorporated into the existing networks. There is funding of up to 100 million euros per application, which makes the project financially attractive.

For Tübingen it means:On the trail of the sun! With the new solar thermal system, the municipal utilities have taken an impressive step towards sustainability and security of supply. Citizens can look forward to a leisure area near the new solar thermal park, which will serve as a place to relax. Sustainable warmth that is also fun – these are prospects that are worth seeing.
