New station of the Donau-Heuberg mountain rescue service: A place for safety and community
After almost five years of planning and implementation, the Donau-Heuberg mountain rescue service has moved into a new home. As the Swabian reports, the dedication of the new guard took place next July 6 as part of the organization's 50th anniversary. For many, the opening is a long-awaited highlight, as the old hut suffered significant deficiencies over the years, including a lack of toilets and showers.
The new station now offers everything the mountain rescue service needs for its important operations: a spacious group room with a kitchenette, modern showers and toilets, a material and medication storage area and an office. Two garages for emergency vehicles are also included. With a total cost of around 480,000 euros, 90 percent of which was financed by the Ministry of the Interior, the new accommodation is a step towards more professional rescue services in inaccessible terrain.
A new standard for mountain rescue
The Donau-Heuberg mountain rescue service, which consists of 17 active members between the ages of 22 and 72, is particularly challenged when the conventional rescue service reaches its limits. As the Donau Heuberg mountain rescue service explains, their missions are diverse and aim to help injured mountain bikers, climbers, forestry workers and even paragliding athletes. The volunteers are on duty around the clock, every day and in all weathers.
Since the spring of 2023, when demolition of the old hut began, the team has had to improvise. Thanks to the new guard, they now have an optimal starting point for their approximately 25 annual missions and regular training evenings. The wait was worth it and the new home offers not only a contemporary standard but also a more comprehensive environment for the organization's training resources.
Celebrations for the consecration
The celebrations for the dedication of the new guard on July 6th begin at 10 a.m., with the official dedication ceremony taking place at 2 p.m. Prominent guests such as deputy on-call manager Matthäus Schiele, Johannes Schubert and Nina Liesch are also expected. The event is not only intended to celebrate the new location, but also to invite the public to take a look behind the scenes. Activities are planned for children, including with a fire chief, and culinary delicacies such as roast pork, fries and ice cream.
For all mountain sports enthusiasts and nature lovers on site, it should not be forgotten that in emergencies the emergency number is available 112 applies. They can contact mountain rescuers as well as the fire brigade and police if it matters. Remember: you may have problems receiving. A simple restart of the cell phone can often help to send the emergency call.
