Timon Dethloff is crowned U-23 hurdle champion in Ulm!
An exciting weekend for athletics: Timon Dethloff (20) from Cologne Athletics secured the 110 meter hurdles title at the German U-23 Championships in Ulm. With a personal best time of 14.14 seconds, he impressively left his competition behind. Dethloff managed to secure the championship win in the first year of his U-23 career, and was the only athlete born in 2005. He himself is proud of this success, even though he missed the qualification standard for the U-23 European Championships, which will take place in Bergen from July 17th to 20th, by just 0.19 seconds. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger further reports that Dethloff benefited from the unexpected failure of Fred Isaac Fleurisson (Eintracht Frankfurt), who was eliminated due to a false start. In addition, Manuel Mordi (Hamburger SV) decided not to start.
In the exciting final, Dethloff left the other athletes behind. Joey Lukacs (LAC Chemnitz) crossed the finish line in second and third place with 14.24 seconds and Felix Doll (TV Engen) with 14.27 seconds. Dethloff had to overcome a stumble at the penultimate hurdle, but it didn't throw him off course. He's already set for his next challenge: the adult national championships, which will take place from July 31 to August 3, where he's aiming for a time under 13 seconds.
Further Cologne successes at the championships
But it wasn't just Dethloff who shone for Cologne Athletics. Emilio Gonzalez (LT DSHS Cologne) secured a place for the U-23 European Championships with a time of 10.29 seconds in the 100 meter final after finishing behind Heiko Gussmann, who sprinted 10.19 seconds. Gonzalez will also compete in the 4x100 meter relay, which recently ran just past the European record in Regensburg. Chidiera Onuoha (ASV Cologne) took third place in the 100 meter final with a time of 10.35 seconds.
Julien Pohl (Cologne Athletics) shone in the high jump and won the title with 2.08 meters. This height also represented the EM standard of 2.20 meters, which it has already met. Berit Janowitz (Cologne Athletics) took third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.07 minutes, while Filipp Broeer (Cologne Athletics) reached 58.64 meters in the U-16 hammer throw and took second place. These impressive achievements confirm that the Cologne athletes are very popular in national athletics.
A look at athletics development
The year 2022 was marked by outstanding competitions for athletics, including the World Championships in the USA and the European Championships in Germany. Statistics show that in the coming years there will be a generational change in men's hurdles. While athletes like Gregor Traber (LAV Stadtwerke Tübingen) and Martin Vogel (LAC Natural Gas Chemnitz) have caused a sensation in recent years, young athletes like Tim Eikermann (TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen) and Stefan Volzer (VfL Sindelfingen) are now pushing their way to the top. It is clear that the gap to the European and global leaders is increasing. Athletes like Asier Martínez (Spain) and US stars Grant Holloway and Devon Allen dominate the international competitions.
The LADM database offers interesting insights into the history of German athletics with medal ranks and performance statistics from over 48,000 individual disciplines, which clearly shows the developments of the last few years.
