Magician Florian Zimmer fights for survival: Theater in crisis!

The heart of magic beats high in Cologne, because the Florian Zimmer Theater is in the middle of its peak season. Loud Augsburger Allgemeine The balance of the year is not yet final, but the audience rewards the performances with frequent standing ovations. Nevertheless, the theater manages to remain competitive amid the challenges of the current economic crisis, even if consumer restraint is noticeable.

In the past year, the theater has seen a higher frequency of shows, and over 90% of tickets are sold via the in-house ticket portal. This move away from large portals such as Eventim is primarily due to the high fees they charge.

The magical community

Florian Zimmer, who sees himself and other magicians as part of a community, does not engage in competition. Roberto Blanco also recently appeared as part of his concept “SimsalaStar”, and new illusions, including a time machine, can be admired in the show “Ulmfassbar”. Zimmer, who was the only German to win the prestigious “Golden Lion Award” in Las Vegas, maintains a close relationship with the famous city and has made friends with greats such as Siegfried & Roy.

Another highlight in the Florian Zimmer Theater is the “Magic Cuisine” restaurant, which only opens on show days. Hosts Manuela and Marc Schumacher offer a 4-course magic menu for 69 euros and a special kids menu for 29 euros. Particularly celebratory occasions are designed with all-inclusive packages in the boxes, which include a magical interlude, aperitif and a five-course menu.

A look into the future

Looking ahead to 2026, the theater plans to introduce additional shows and offers such as a Magic Dinner and the children's show “Flo Circus”. Discussions with artists for larger event formats are also underway. Despite the challenges the theater suffered from fire damage three years ago and disputes with manager Michael Ecker, it has proven resilient. The fire led to high investments and underinsurance, which had serious financial consequences.

The German stage reports, however, that the entire theater scene is struggling with difficulties. Cultural spending in cities like Berlin and Munich is being cut significantly, which puts many theaters in an existential threat. The consequences can also be felt in the independent scene, where many groups, especially those that rely on project funding, are suffering from the savings.

Despite these uncertainties, the Florian Zimmer Theater is combative and optimistic. Passion for the art of illusion and commitment to community, especially in difficult times, are the ingredients that keep theater alive. With a knack for new ideas and creating a fantastic experience for audiences, the theater continues to be at the center of Cologne's cultural scene.
