Alliance for Democracy in the Wittelsbacher Land: Strong voices for the future!
November 1, 2025 marks an important day for democracy in the Wittelsbacher Land. In a public meeting chaired by deputy district administrator Katrin Müllegger-Steiger, the “Partnership for Democracy Wittelsbacher Land” alliance was founded. This new alliance has set itself the goal of strengthening the region's democratic culture and actively involving citizens in the dialogue. [Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/aichach/buendnis-der-partnerschaft-fuer-demokratie-wittelsbacher-land-will-die-demokratie-staerken-112702945) reports that the statutes and the regulation of the right to speak were also discussed.
Around two thirds of the 30 members of the alliance introduced themselves. The members include representatives from various areas, including the district court, the school authority, the adult education center, the Catholic deanery, the world shop, the women's forum, Caritas and the Augsburg University of Technology. Such a wide range of representatives shows the commitment and diversity within the alliance, which strives to improve democratic participation.
Financial support and events
The alliance can access financial resources of 90,000 to 100,000 euros this year, while 110,000 euros have already been planned for 2026. Beyond that, federal funds are available until 2032. In order to further strengthen democracy, a situation and resource analysis was commissioned by July 15, 2026, which will be carried out by Eichstätt University for almost 14,000 euros.
A highlight last year was the Long Night of Democracy in Aichach and Mering, which met with great interest, particularly among the younger generation. The continuation of this event is already being planned, even if the details for new editions at different locations are still unclear. In addition, a joint event between the municipality of Obergriesbach and the Aichach-Friedberg adult education center will take place on November 4th, which will deal with the topic "Dare to argue more! How we can strengthen the democratic culture of debate".
Citizen participation and participation
The opportunity for citizen participation is very important to the alliance. In justified exceptional cases, citizens can be given the right to speak at meetings. This is part of a larger trend in which more and more people want to be actively involved in political processes. [Political Education](https://www.politik-bildung.de/buerger participation.html) notes that not only representative democracy, but also direct democracy is becoming more and more important.
The interest in political participation is also reflected in the declining voter turnout and the growing desire for new forms of engagement. This makes the work of the alliance all the more important, as it not only plans advertising for the local elections in March 2026, but also calls on people to collect ideas from the population and bring them together into the political discourse.
The next meeting of the alliance will take place at the end of March after the local elections to discuss the first steps of the newly elected members and to start new projects together. The regulations for the allocation of funds, according to which expenditures of up to 1,500 euros can be decided by the coordination office in the district office, show that pragmatic solutions are also being sought here.
