District administrator surprises Pöttmes' ABC shooters with organic snacks and cans!
In Pöttmes a very special day was celebrated for 72 primary school children who had just started school. District Administrator Klaus Metzger came by personally to present the ABC shooters with a healthy organic snack. There was great joy when the children were welcomed by Rector Ursula Werner, Mayor Mirko Ketz, as well as teachers and representatives of the municipal waste management, Matthias Lesti and Mario Grimm. The initiative to support primary school students in the topic of waste avoidance is being actively pushed forward again this year.
The highlight of the event was the healthy snack provided by Regina Roland from the Paartal eco-model region and the organic farmer Elisabeth Birkmeir. The children were able to enjoy tasty organic apples and organic carrots from Demeterhof Birkmeir, complemented by delicious organic wholemeal rolls from the Seitz bakery. This combination shows how important a sustainable and healthy diet is for young people starting school.
1700 stainless steel lunch boxes for the ABC shooters
Another important point of the campaign was the distribution of around 1,700 stainless steel lunch boxes throughout the district. This practical utensil is enthusiastically accepted by the children and not only helps to avoid waste, but also reminds us of a sustainable life with the logo of the environmental hero “Oxi”. By using these cans, each student has the opportunity to avoid around 200 disposable bags per year.
The municipal waste management company has firmly decided to continue to support primary and special schools in the region in avoiding waste in the future. Actions like these are of great importance when you consider that around 12.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents are generated through food every year in Austria, which is more than the total amount of passenger transport. It is therefore important that our children are made aware of a sustainable lifestyle from the very beginning.
Tips for a healthy diet
Nutrition plays a crucial role in health and performance, as numerous studies confirm. Healthy school snacks should consist of whole grain products, fresh fruit and vegetables and enough liquid. Fair, organic and regional products are not only environmentally friendly, but also promote awareness of the origin of the food. And this is exactly where the educational aspect comes into play: students should be guided in the right direction through role models and active discussion of their diet.
It is pleasing to see that the municipality of Pöttmes and the responsible actors show a good hand for environmental education and healthy nutrition. One could say: This is where the foundation is laid for cross-generational responsibility towards the environment. Because our children are the environmental heroes of tomorrow!
