Burghausen wrestler Roland Schwarz wins bronze at the Military World Championships!

The German wrestling scene can look forward to great successes! Roland Schwarz and Erik Thiele, two talented athletes from SV Wacker Burghausen's Bundesliga squad, showed impressive performances at the German Championships and then also proved themselves internationally. Schwarz was nominated for the Military World Championships and won the bronze medal in the 87 kg weight class in the Greco-Roman style. Erik Thiele, on the other hand, took part in the Yasar Dogu tournament in Turkey and finished in 5th place.

But how did the exciting competition go for Black? In his opening fight he took on Sanad Alsibyani from Saudi Arabia and won impressively 10-0. He didn't miss a beat in the quarterfinals either, defeating the Tunisian Sabri Mnasria 5-0. Unfortunately, Schwarz had to admit defeat to Hungary's Tamas Levai in the semifinals, which didn't stop him from competing for the bronze medal against India's Sushant. Luckily for him, Sushant's points were withdrawn due to illegal footwork, so Black was able to win the fight.

Erik's challenges in Turkey

Erik Thiele fought in the weight class up to 97 kg and defeated the Turkish Rifat Eren Gidak with 6:5 points. In the subsequent quarter-finals, however, Thiele suffered a defeat against Bulgaria's Akhmed Magamaev due to a shoulder throw. He fought bravely in the repechage round, but lost to Aleksandr Hushtyn from Belarus, which unfortunately only brought him 5th place.

The year 2025 promises to be an exciting time not only for the two athletes, but also for German wrestling. The German Wrestling Championships will take place in Elsenfeld in January 2025, where talented wrestlers will fight for the best places. Team wrestling championships have been held in Germany since 1922, and there is lively competition in the wrestling Bundesliga, which has brought together the best clubs in the country since its introduction in 1964. The championships not only show talented individual athletes, but also the strength of the teams. SV Wacker Burghausen was able to prove itself as team champion again in 2023/24, which underlines its leading position in the German wrestling scene.

Although the popularity of wrestling in Germany has suffered somewhat in recent years - in 2022 there were around 62,000 members of the German Wrestling Association, the lowest number since 2002 - the sport remains one of the oldest martial arts and achieved Olympic recognition as early as 1896. Wrestling is practiced in two main styles: freestyle, which allows the entire body to attack, and Greco-Roman style, which only allows wrestling above the belt. We can look forward to the upcoming competitions and whether Schwarz and Thiele can continue their successes.

For all wrestling fans, keep your fingers crossed! Further information on the latest developments and results can be found on the website of pnp.de, Wikipedia and ringen100.de be tracked.
