Eight-year-old e-scooter driver seriously injured in accident in Herrieden!

A tragic incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Herrieden in the Ansbach district. An eight-year-old girl who was riding an e-scooter on the sidewalk on Röser Straße was seriously injured in a collision with a delivery truck. The 23-year-old driver of the vehicle did not notice the young driver turning onto Röser Straße and hit her. The girl was thrown several meters forward and remained briefly unconscious. She was taken to a special clinic in Nuremberg with suspected traumatic brain injury.

The accident, which occurred around 7:10 p.m., drew criticism from the lack of awareness on the roads. In total, the damage to the vehicles amounts to around 2,400 euros. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the driver of the van for negligent bodily harm, which underlines the seriousness of the situation. InFranken reports that this incident is not the first to illustrate the dangers in road traffic, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.

Current trends in e-scooter accidents

E-scooters have established themselves as a practical means of transport in recent years, but the number of unreported accidents associated with them is alarming. According to a study by the Technical University of Munich, e-scooter accidents in Germany show clear patterns. Most accidents occur at night and on weekends, with younger male drivers, often drunk, disproportionately affected.

This analysis makes it clear that effective traffic safety is urgently needed in this area. [The German Health Portal reports that a third of seriously injured e-scooter drivers were above the legal alcohol limit, which is fueling the discussion about a possible helmet requirement. In Australia, such a regulation has already led to a reduction in the number of injuries.

Safety suggestions to reduce accidents

  • Reduzierung der Scooter-Verfügbarkeit nachts und an Unfallhotspots
  • Drosselung der Höchstgeschwindigkeit ab einer bestimmten Uhrzeit
  • Einführung von Reaktionstests im Ausleihprozess zur Minimierung alkoholbedingter Fahrten
  • Prüfung der Machbarkeit einer Helmpflicht

With the number of e-scooter accidents increasing, it is time to think about improvements. Over 80% of seriously injured people require treatment in intensive care units, and the most common injuries are to the head and face. The authors of the study are therefore calling for urgent measures from the legislature to increase road safety and prevent tragic accidents like those in Herrieden in the future.
