International friendship: Augsburg exchange with Pervomaisk starts!

A special event is just around the corner: six young people from the Ukrainian city of Pervomaysk are guests in Augsburg! Mayor Eva Weber welcomes the group as part of a youth exchange aimed at giving young people from Ukraine the opportunity to gain experience outside of war.

The exchange is not only an opportunity for personal encounters, but also a platform to promote understanding and peace. “International youth meetings are important for understanding,” says Weber. The youth exchange is organized in collaboration with the German-Ukrainian Association Augsburg and the Office for Children, Youth and Families. What is particularly noteworthy is that the young people from Augsburg who accompany the guests were selected through a public selection process.

An exciting program

The program is varied and includes a language-sensitive theater workshop, a trip to the Haus der Kunst in Munich and a guided tour with a workshop in the Textile Museum. Another highlight is a two-day media project that deals with the topic of youth culture. The results of this project will be presented on Friday, November 7th at 6 p.m. at the Culture Night presented at the Villa Youth Center.

The exchange aims to give the young people from Pervomaysk experiences that are far removed from war and to give them cultural insights. The future plans are also promising: a joint trip to French young people in Bourges is planned for 2026, entirely in the spirit of respect and international friendship.

Solidarity with Ukraine

The city of Augsburg has shown strong solidarity with Ukraine in the wake of the Russian war of aggression. A project partnership was launched in 2023 to improve the drinking water supply in Pervomaysk. These initiatives show that even small towns can make a decisive contribution to international understanding and aid.

Future cooperation and the opportunity to learn from the experiences of Ukrainian youth is seen as an important step to strengthen dialogue and friendship between cultures. At a time when personal encounters are even more important, Augsburg is showing one thing with this exchange: This is a good hand for the future of international relations!
