Climate protection in the Augsburg district: New concept for a greener future!

The update of the climate protection concept has officially begun in the Augsburg district. This happens around 15 years after the introduction of the first regional climate protection concept as part of the climate protection region A³. A workshop brought together representatives from various areas, including the climate protection and mobility department of the district office, waste management companies, energy suppliers, members of the district council and local public transport stakeholders. District Administrator Martin Sailer opened this workshop with an urgent appeal for shared responsibility for climate protection, which has become more important than ever.

Jonas Fricke, head of the climate protection and mobility department, gave insights into the current status of climate protection work. Meanwhile, Lennart Hirschbiegel from Ark Climate explained the methodology for updating the concept. The workshop offered plenty of space for exchange, discussions and bubbling ideas. During a so-called gallery walk, participants were able to submit their suggestions, whereby the great participation of regional players became clear.

Together for climate protection

New approaches were presented in the discussions, such as innovative educational formats and energy saving measures. The goal of prioritizing topics and measures and defining concrete implementation steps was clearly formulated. The focus is particularly on projects that have a direct impact on the district office's area of responsibility. The Augsburg district has already shown impressive commitment by founding a citizens' energy cooperative, regional climate protection conferences and the expansion of photovoltaic systems on district-owned buildings.

The citizens' energy cooperative, part of the regional approach to promoting the energy transition, also plays a central role. This cooperative not only supports the decentralized energy transition, but also encourages citizens to participate financially. With the aim of promoting civic engagement for climate-friendly energy production and environmental protection, they work closely with municipalities, private individuals and industry. A strong community energy network

Overall, citizen energy stands for diversity in Germany, with thousands of actors driving the movement forward. The Citizen Energy Alliance has the task of strengthening the citizen energy movement and regularly delivers brochures, studies and guidelines that shed light on important aspects of this movement. The knowledge database of Bündnis Bürgerenergie also offers an overview of the various technologies and topics that cover citizen energy.

The updating process of the climate protection concept in the Augsburg district clearly shows that climate protection is a joint project that requires tireless commitment and innovative approaches. The workshop participants were committed and optimistic about the next steps and the effectiveness of the projects. The Environment and Energy Committee has already decided to update the climate protection concept for 2025, and with a participatory approach it is hoped for a viable strategy for the future.
