Earthquake danger in Bavaria: Where the greatest risks lurk!

There are two regions in Bavaria where the risk of earthquakes is higher than elsewhere. This could be news to many, as the risk of earthquakes is relatively low compared to the rest of the world. This makes it all the more important to take the warnings seriously. Experts of the Earth System Knowledge Platform (ESKP) warn urgently that the risk of earthquakes is “not negligible”. The zones in question where the risk is higher are in the south, west and center of Bavaria.

One of the two particularly affected regions is in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the second highest risk level applies. The northern earthquake zone stretches from the western border of Bavaria to Gaimersheim north of Ingolstadt and includes places such as Donauwörth, Eichstätt and Nördlingen. The southern zone extends from the border of Baden-Württemberg to the Miesbach district and includes the districts of Oberallgäu, Ostallgäu, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Miesbach.

Current seismic activity

There is also an extensive earthquake hazard map prepared by Prof. Dr. Gottfried Grünthal was published in the 1990s. This map is part of the earthquake-friendly building standards DIN EN 1998-1/NA and is an important resource for raising awareness of the topic.

Small earthquakes – big significance?

Overall, the Bavarian State Office for the Environment registers “hundreds of small earthquakes” every year, which, however, do not contain any spectacular major earthquakes. The vibrations are often so small that the residents don't even notice them. Nevertheless, one could say that these “little quakes” are like still water: they have great importance when it comes to preparation and safety.

In order to continue monitoring the situation and stay up to date, interested citizens can easily access the measurements via the Internet. The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich provides comprehensive data and allows a view of earthquake locations in Bavaria and neighboring areas over the last 365 days, with the most recent earthquake marked in green.

In view of this information, it is anything but wrong to think a little more about the topic of earthquakes in Bavaria and also keep precautionary measures in mind, because after all, nature is unpredictable and there is something to be done!
