Something is happening in the area of nature conservation in Upper Franconia: The district recently released 200 mud peepers, also known as fart gobies, in two biotopes near Bischberg. These small fish are adapted to muddy waters and have the remarkable ability to absorb oxygen through their intestinal lining. The Bischberg fishing guild has big plans. After 400 specimens were released near Kulmbach two years ago, a long-term strategy is now being worked on. The region near Bischberg is considered particularly suitable for the settlement of this fish species. The guild plans to release young mudpeizgers every year and would like to control the settlement in three to five years. But the fart goby is not alone: In addition to these fish, other species such as lye, gudgeon, nose and barbel are also sown. Every year around 50,000 fish come into the water for around 50,000 euros. A good hand is urgently needed here!
The current water quality
Despite these positive steps, the water quality in Bavarian rivers is often poor. Only 19 percent of the water bodies are in good ecological condition. The main burdens are diffuse nutrient inputs from agriculture and changed water structures. This makes it clear that there is a need for further action to renaturate water bodies and create habitats such as ponds and ditches.
In addition to the environmental situation, there are also important health issues that cannot go unmentioned.
