Karlsbad celebrates: main prize for daring dropouts documented!
July 12, 2025 is all about filmmaking and creativity, because today the main prize of the 59th International Karlsbad Film Festival was awarded in the picturesque Karlsbad. The crystal globe, which is endowed with $ 25,000 (around 21,400 euros), went to the Slovak director Miro Remo for his documentary "Better to go crazy in the wilderness". The film tells the gripping story of two twin brothers, which as a dropout on a farm in the Czech Böhmerwald lead an alternative life. This charming homage to life far from society was emphasized by the jury as a “funny tribute to the art of staying true to itself”.
Hollywood star Michael Douglas had caused a lot of sensation at the beginning of the festival by presenting a restored version of "one flew over the cuckoo's nest", a film that he co-produced. He was honored with a crystal globe to make up for an award from 1998. At the final gala, the Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, known from films such as “Good Will Hunting” and “Dune”, was awarded for his life's work. This was the first edition of the festival since the death of long -time President Jiri Bartosek in May, and it attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.

The Karlsbad Film Festival is one of the oldest in the world and not only offers the opportunity to see the latest cinematic works, but also the chance of experiencing film stars up close. It positions itself alongside other important festivals such as Cannes or Venice and contributes to cultural diversity. The jury had a strong selection of films with female leading roles and less controversial guests this year compared to previous years.
The important award winners and their outstanding contributions make the festival an unforgettable event. It remains to be seen which stories the filmmakers will present us in the coming year.
