On the night of Saturday, June 14, 2025, a serious traffic accident in Berchtesgaden caused a stir. A 24-year-old driver left the road on the B305 around 1 a.m. and crashed his vehicle into a bridge railing. The car's Ecall automatically alerted the emergency services, triggering a major rescue operation. The police, fire department and several ambulances responded immediately because it was initially unclear whether there were other people in the vehicle.
On scene, officers found the driver in his vehicle with minor injuries. This man, a local from the direction of Marktschellenberg, was immediately taken to the hospital for an examination. While investigating the accident, the emergency services noticed the smell of alcohol, which is why a blood sample was taken. Instead, criminal proceedings were initiated against the driver for endangering road traffic. The economic total loss to the vehicle amounted to around 30,000 euros.
Alcohol while driving: a serious problem
Alcohol-related traffic accidents are a serious problem in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, statistics recorded an alarming number of such accidents between 1995 and 2023. In 2022 alone, there were 12,813 accidents involving alcohol, which represents an increase of 4.5 percent compared to 2021. These frightening figures show that many road users are still careless about drinking and driving.
