ASV Cham gives away victory: Dramatic final minutes in the home game!

The crisis among the Cham handball players continues to affect the Oberliga Süd. Last weekend, the home game against HSG Dietmannsried/Altusried ended in a disappointing 28:28 draw, although the Cham team led 27:24 until the 55th minute. After six games, ASV Cham has a sobering result: two wins, two draws and two defeats. The last four games were victorious and show that the club is having difficulty getting out of the current tense situation. [Mittelbayerische] reports that the Cham team had problems especially in their attacking game, as it often seemed static and predictable.

After the first half, department head Andreas Schmaderer expressed his satisfaction with the point win. Nevertheless, there were errors in decision-making and a lack of concentration. The Cham team missed a total of four seven meters, which was ultimately decisive in the loss of points. In particular, a missed seven-meter penalty from Manuel Wagener in the 57th minute hurt. Ten seconds before the end, the Cham team had a great chance to win, but this was also missed, which led to a bitter end.

Crucial minutes and player frustration

Another key moment was coach Piroch's decision to play seven against six in the final stages while Cham led by four goals. This tactic didn't work as the HSG took advantage of their superiority and scored into the empty goal. Cham were unable to secure victory despite taking the lead, which also reflected the frustration of keeper Marius Bistrian, who received a time penalty for his emotional reaction. HSG's equalizer came just 90 seconds before the end and left the Cham team empty-handed.

ASV Cham now urgently needs to find its way out of its form crisis in order to make the next games more successful and free itself from the bottom of the table. The challenge lies not only on the field, but also in the mental strength of the players. Sports psychology, which was most recently discussed at the asp conference 2023 in Stuttgart, offers an interesting perspective. Sports psychologists such as Henning Thrien and André Haber, who worked together successfully at SC DHfK Leipzig for several years, emphasized the need to talk about failure and how it can be successful in professional sport. According to [The Sports Psychologists], sports psychology can also play an important role in handball in order to strengthen the players mentally.

The next games will show whether ASV Cham can turn the corner and free itself from its current misery. The situation is tense, but perhaps a rethink and new approaches are the key to success.
