Serious accident on B20: 100,000 euros in damage and driver injured!
A serious traffic accident caused a stir on the B 20 federal highway near Cham on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at around 3:15 p.m. A 45-year-old driver from the region, who apparently noticed a secured construction site too late, left the road with her Volvo SUV and rammed the rear of a parked construction site truck with great force. The accident occurred between the Kothmaißling and Weiding junctions and resulted in enormous material damage totaling around 100,000 euros, of which the total loss of the SUV alone accounted for 60,000 euros. The damage to the truck amounts to around 40,000 euros.
The emergency services were quickly at the scene of the accident and treated the seriously injured driver before transporting her to the clinic in Cham. The fire departments from Cham, Weiding, Kothmaißling and Dalking were on site and did everything they could to provide fire protection and secure the scene of the accident. During the rescue work, the B20 had to be completely closed for around an hour, which led to long traffic jams at the affected junctions. A single-lane traffic control system was set up and the Technical Relief Agency (THW) was deployed with a traffic safety trailer. The police assume that inattention was the cause of the accident, as it was not possible to question the driver on site, as the Mittelbayerische reports.
Another accident on the B20
This incident is not the only one that has happened on the B20 recently. On Friday morning, December 6, 2024, a 75-year-old driver from the Cham district drove his Peugeot into the oncoming lane. He hit a total of five oncoming vehicles, but fortunately no serious injuries were reported. Witnesses clarified the situation, which was initially unclear. The man was traveling from Cham towards Furth im Wald in his white station wagon. A reason for crossing the center line is currently unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
The fire brigade was also deployed here to secure the accident site, which stretched over several hundred meters. The conditions due to the complete closure of the B20 and diversions were probably a challenge for rush-hour traffic, which had to suffer from the traffic jam for hours. These frequent accidents on the B20 shed light on the safety situation on our roads and the need to take measures to improve road safety, which is also underlined by the statistics from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Traffic accident statistics are an important tool for analyzing and improving road safety. It records accidents, those involved, vehicle types and causes and thus creates a basis for future legislation and traffic education. It remains to be hoped that such data collection and the resulting measures can prevent serious accidents such as the incidents on the B20 in the future.
