The Wohnbau Stadt Coburg (WSCO) can look back on a proud history, as it is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Founded in 1950, the company has set itself the goal of providing affordable housing in Coburg. The anniversary celebration not only honored the long tradition, but also WSCO's commitment to a stable rental landscape in the region, which was particularly emphasized by Mayor Dominik Sauerteig. At the celebration, WSCO received praise from all quarters - including from tenant Ursula Brixel, who has lived in a WSCO apartment for almost 65 years. At 89, she talks about her positive experiences and the importance of the company for the city. It is noteworthy that WSCO currently offers over 3,200 apartments with an average rent of just 5.21 euros per square meter, which is not a given these days. The offering ranges from family-friendly neighborhoods to modern apartments and barrier-free senior apartments that meet the needs of a wide range of tenants.
From the founding to the present
WSCO's first residential complexes were built immediately after its founding in the Pilgramsroth and Eupenstraße districts. The founding fathers laid the foundation stone on March 9, 1950, paving the way for a strong and social housing company. To date, WSCO employs over 100 people who are actively involved in creating and maintaining housing. After all, the company is not only responsible for providing housing, but also for the development and renovation of districts. After its renovation, Albertsplatz received a new coat of paint and is now a popular meeting place for Coburgers.
Another focus of residential construction is the provision of parking spaces. The company currently operates four central parking garages and has opened a new large parking lot on Anger. Another parking lot will be opened at the freight station later this year. In this way, WSCO not only shows foresight when it comes to living space design, but also when it comes to mobility.
A challenge for the future
While the housing city of Coburg can look back on a successful past, the coming years will also be challenging. In view of the rising rents in Germany - the asking rents for apartments rose significantly overall from 2020 to 2024, as a study by Statista shows - the WSCO's goal remains to continue to offer affordable housing despite difficult conditions. Modernization measures and the upgrading of neighborhoods are also being planned and should help to continually improve the living environment of Coburgers.
