Basketball drama in Munich: Germany loses Supercup against Serbia!

The mood was tense in Munich's SAP Garden when the German national basketball team had to compete against the Serbian selection in the Supercup final on August 16, 2025. However, in front of around 11,579 spectators, the Germans were unable to maintain the high level they had shown in recent months. With 81:91 they had to admit defeat to the Serbs, who are considered the top favorites for the upcoming European Championships.

Led by NBA star Nikola Jokic, who only scored seven points, the Serbs showed their strength from the start. While Germany started to catch up in the final quarter, victory remained out of reach. Particularly notable on the German side was Franz Wagner, who shone with 26 points. Captain Dennis Schröder contributed 12 points to the final result, while Tristan da Silva and Johannes Thiemann contributed with 14 and 11 points.

Missing key players and the challenges of the national coach

Despite the fighting performance, national coach Alex Mumbru and his team still have a lot of work to do. Important players such as Daniel Theis, Leon scratch and David Krämer were not in the squad due to injuries. Preparation for the European Championships is therefore not an easy task, as the team has often not been able to compete in full strength in previous test matches.

The next challenges are already waiting: on August 21st there will be a test match against the European champions from Spain in Madrid, followed by another game on August 24th in Cologne. Here it is important for the national team to strengthen its defense and close the remaining gaps.

Looking forward to the European Championships

The European Championship begins for Germany on August 27th when the team meets Montenegro. While the team works on their form, the question remains as to how much of the Supercup defeat was due to the missing players. It remains to be hoped that they will be fit again by the European Championships and can strengthen the team.

In recent years, the German team has shown time and again that they can keep up with the best. The players and coaches are working hard to overcome the challenges, although preparations are far from complete. The wait is no longer long - the fans can look forward to the upcoming start of the European Championship.
