New life in Steinweg: Coburg's renovation surprises everyone!
What's going on in Coburg? The Steinweg is really picking up speed and is becoming a real hotspot in the city. The Steinwegvorstadt redevelopment area is no longer just a plan on paper. As the NP Coburg According to reports, new paving has already been laid in Schenkgasse, a splashy water feature has been installed and inviting seating has been created. In this way, the district attracts more and more people and ensures lively streets.
As is often the case with renovation projects, sometimes the reality and the original vision look a little different. Particularly striking is the “green watercourse”, which was intended to be reminiscent of the old Hahn River, but was implemented differently in practice. The managing director of Wohnbau Stadt Coburg GmbH, which acts as the redevelopment agency here, will provide details of these deviations in a statement.
Creative impulses for the city center
But the Steinweg not only offers new places to linger, but has also really sparked the city's creativity. The “Zwischenzeit Steinweg” project is revitalizing the northern city center through various vacant property projects. Students and pupils can use rooms in properties in need of renovation free of charge to present their projects, whereby they only have to pay for electricity and heating costs. Currently, three out of ten renovation areas are already in student hands.
Exciting things are also happening in Schenkgasse. The association “Wirgestalten e.V.” regularly organizes workshops and lectures there that invite you to participate and exchange ideas. The Design Faculty at Coburg University also took the opportunity to create creative spaces. Two groups have set up workspaces in Lohgraben and Steinweg in order to actively participate in city events.
Quality of life and cultural offerings
Even more: There is a basket maker in Lohgraben that offers handcrafted treasures from the region. Steinweg 37 is enlivened by the youth art school Regenbogentanz e.V., which offers cultural and educational projects. In addition, the association iSo – Innovative Social Work has opened an office at Steinweg 25 that provides outreach youth work. This shows how diverse the social and cultural offerings are in this area.
The demand for creative and temporary uses is high: from December 2019 to the present, 22 interim uses have been initiated on an area of 1,256 m², most of which last between three and twelve months. All spaces are currently occupied and Wifög and the Coburger Designforum Oberfranken e.V. are important for providing these spaces, creating new perspectives for the city center.
The developments in Steinweg show: Coburg has set out with a colorful mix of creativity, community and urban life. The renovation measures and the associated activities not only offer space for new ideas, but also strengthen coexistence in the city.
