Two hearts, one goal: DSC supervisor Helmut Sonndorfer in derby fever

The return of an old friend has caused a sensation in the ice hockey scene in the Deggendorf district. Helmut Sonndorfer, the 56-year-old manager of Deggendorfer SC (DSC), is causing excitement in the fan communities - for several reasons. The Schöllnach native not only has an impressive career with the club, but is also known for his sympathies for the Passau Black Hawks, his current team's biggest rival.

“Two hearts beat in my chest,” says Sonndorfer, describing his eventful relationship with both clubs. He has been an ice hockey fan since his childhood and has followed the ups and downs of the game in Deggendorf for over 30 years, including numerous away trips in the Bayernliga. About a decade ago he moved his job to Passau and offered his services there as a supervisor for the Black Hawks. Under then-President Christian Eder, he was hired by the Passauer team for three years, which brought him numerous acquaintances.

Emotional return

In February of this year, Sonndorfer began a new phase of his life as a pensioner and he returned to Deggendorf to be closer to his family. Since the summer he has been supporting Simon Schwer, the DSC supervisor. Visiting the first Danube derby of the season in October was a particularly emotional experience for him. He received great applause from both fan camps before the start of the game, and the tributes from stadium announcer Oliver Czapko and former president Christian Eder moved him to tears.

The next derby is on the agenda next Sunday and expectations are high. Around 2,666 spectators are expected in the sold-out Hitzkopf Arena who want to experience an exciting duel between DSC and Black Hawks. Sonndorfer expressed his confidence: “I’m happy about every point from Passauer, but my heart beats for the DSC.”

A look at monetary realities

These economic aspects are also important for local sports development. Depending on the exchange rate situation, sponsors and investments can have both positive and negative effects on the clubs.

Whether on the ice in Deggendorf or on the currency market, there are always exciting developments that are worth following. All we can say here is: “There’s something going on” for all ice hockey fans in the region!
