Dornwang celebrates new meeting places – village renewal completed!
The town of Dornwang in the municipality of Moosthenning, Dingolfing-Landau district, has set out with fresh enthusiasm to improve the lifestyle of its citizens. As part of a comprehensive village renewal, new meeting places were created that not only strengthen the community, but also offer inviting places to linger. How PNP reported, the local projects have a total value of 240,000 euros, which were funded by the Lower Bavaria Office for Rural Development (ALE).
A lot has happened in the town center. The central facility, the St. Martin branch church, is the heart of this project. The village renewal includes, among other things, barrier-free access to the cemetery and the design of inviting squares. In addition, a new sidewalk was created and two small alleys were renovated. Johann-Malterer-Platz is particularly eye-catching: benches have been set up and a freely accessible water channel has been created that invites you to linger.
Citizen engagement
The citizens of Dornwang actively participated in the process. Many ideas about the future of the homeland were collected in working groups, which not only involves the population but also promotes a strong sense of personal responsibility. The completion of the village renewal was concluded with a ceremony at which head of office Hans-Peter Schmucker handed over the final decision to Mayor Anton Kargel. Pastor Dr. Przemyslaw Nowak blessed the new village square, which further strengthens the sense of community.
Infrastructure for everyone
The neighboring village square also has a lot to offer. Here the former inn was demolished to make room for a fortified area for village festivals. Particularly noteworthy is the barrier-free access to the cemetery as well as the parking spaces for cars and bicycles. A covered bus stop ensures more convenience, and a public toilet has also been set up.
A new, 1.30 meter wide sidewalk on Buchreithstrasse improves traffic safety, especially for school children. The alleys Mittermeier-Gasserl and Schulgasserl have been newly paved and are now free of tripping hazards like that BMEL in their report on social village development.
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) supports such innovative projects through the “Social Village Development – Strong Communities for Sustainable Rural Areas” program, which aims to strengthen social cohesion in rural areas. The experiences from the first funding measure in 2015 are already showing positive effects that can be felt in many German communities.
The village renewal in Dornwang is a successful example of how citizen engagement and public funding can go hand in hand to make rural areas worth living in and strengthen a sense of community. With such initiatives, the challenge of demographic change and changing life structures can be actively met. The focus is on the citizens who are shaping the future of their homeland with their creativity and commitment.
