Renewable energies up close: Research Day inspires primary school students in Nördlingen
On July 11, 2025, a research day took place in the daycare center at the Schäufelinschule, supported by “Kinder forschen” and the Donau-Ries district office. Bundestag member Christoph Schmid answered questions from primary school children about renewable energies and built a mini biogas plant with them. The afternoon ended with a dance by the dance group.

Renewable energies up close: Research Day inspires primary school students in Nördlingen
There was a very special day on the agenda today at the day care center at the Schäufelin School in Nördlingen: the Research Day, which took place in collaboration with the “Children for Research” initiative and the Donau-Ries District Office. Bundestag member Christoph Schmid made a detour to support the curious elementary school students and offer them an exciting experience on the subject of renewable energies. It was not only a day of experimentation, but also of knowledge sharing.
A total of four stations were set up where the children could ask their questions, which Schmid answered with great commitment. The focus was particularly on the construction of a mini biogas plant, which clearly showed the children how renewable energy production works. The children's enthusiasm and curiosity visibly impressed the MP, who drew a positive conclusion about the young researchers' commitment.
Explore the energy of the future
The Research Day was not only an educational event, but also an opportunity to strengthen children's interest in renewable energies. This topic is of great importance because it is loud Mini biogas the sustainable use of energy has positive effects on people and the environment. Biogas plants play a central role here, as they produce methane in an environmentally friendly way, which is used as an energy source in many countries, including Asian ones.
But how exactly does a biogas plant work? During methane production, the biomass goes through various steps such as hydrolysis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis, and the children can experience all of this up close as part of their experiments. Energy sets a precedent offers comprehensive materials and teaching aids for teachers and students who deal with the topics of energy and the energy industry.
An exciting afternoon
The afternoon ended with a lively dance by the dance group, which underlined how much fun the children had while learning. Such events not only promote judgment on important issues, but also awaken enthusiasm for science and renewable energy technology. Events like Research Day are therefore essential to give children access that goes beyond the classroom and gets them excited about the topics of the future.
This initiative is another example of how important it is to prepare the next generation for the challenges of tomorrow - in a way that is fun and encourages participation.
