City cycling 2024: Together for health and environmental protection in Nördlingen!

From July 6th to 27th, 2024, Nördlingen will once again be all about pedals! City cycling, organized by the TSV 1861 Nördlingen running club, has developed into a real success story over the past year. With a total of 597 participants in 53 teams, an impressive 137,442 kilometers were cycled, which led to a saving of 23 tons of CO2, as Nördlingen reported.

The aim of the event is clear: to cover as many everyday journeys as possible by bike and not only collect the kilometers for your own teams, but also actively contribute to improving air quality and your own well-being. Participation is open to everyone – whether an individual, company, school or club, there is something for everyone here.

Benefits of Cycling

Cycling offers a wealth of health benefits. Not only does it strengthen the cardiovascular system, improve physical fitness and help burn fat, it also reduces stress and promotes general well-being. According to the Federal Environment Agency, it only costs 1.6 cents per kilometer with a trekking bike, compared to 73 cents with a mid-range car. Cycling also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and traffic noise.

At a time when urban areas are increasingly suffering from traffic congestion, the bicycle could be a real alternative as a fast and space-saving means of transport. In Germany, over 40% of car journeys are on journeys shorter than 5 kilometers - ideal for switching to cycling.

Activities as part of the city cycling 2024

The opening event on July 7, 2025 will be particularly exciting, starting with an after-work tour of around 15 kilometers to eco-account areas. The meeting point is in front of the town hall; registration is required at biller@noerdlingen.de. Bicycle coding by the ADFC Donau-Ries is on the program on July 9, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. No registration is necessary, just come along!

Why should you cycle? Quite simply: cycling and walking play a crucial role in counteracting obesity and lack of exercise. According to the WHO, lack of exercise and air pollution are responsible for more than 1 million deaths every year. A good cycling infrastructure is therefore not just a question of mobility, but also of health.

The path to sustainable mobility

All these aspects show that cycling is not only a lifestyle but also a necessity. Experts estimate that in many cities up to 30% of car trips could be shifted to cycling. Observations from cities such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam demonstrate the positive effects of cycling on the environment and the quality of life of residents.

In order to achieve a higher share of cycling in the long term, both investment and non-investment measures are required to make the infrastructure safe and inviting for cyclists. Positive examples from other cities can serve as a model to promote cycling in Nördlingen as an attractive option.

Further information and activities relating to city cycling are regularly announced on the website www.stadtradeln.de as well as the city homepage www.noerdlingen.de and on social media. So, grab your bike and join in!
