Brave Poinger conquers 1,170 kilometers: four days of cycling adventure to Poreč!
Nora Battermann from Poing set out on a remarkable bike tour: within four days she pedaled an impressive 1,170 kilometers from her home to Poreč, Poing's twin town, and back again. This reports Mercury. Their journey, which also covered 1,500 meters in altitude, was not only a sporting challenge, but also a journey of discovery through breathtaking landscapes.
Battermann got to know cycling more intensively during the corona pandemic in 2021. She was already active in sports before, jogging and playing squash. The inspiration for their tour came from signs in Poing that point out the city's friendship with Poreč. On her departure she was personally seen off by Mayor Thomas Stark, and in Poreč Mayor Loris Persuric also agreed to give her a warm welcome.
A program full of challenges
As befits a real bike ride, sleep was a scarce resource: Battermann only managed four hours each night. In order to complete her plan over a long weekend, she even got in the saddle at 4:30 a.m. In order to be able to cope better with the hilly routes, she only took the bare minimum of luggage with her and was therefore able to maintain her pace.
The outward journey took them over the magnificent Alps, past the Großglockner and on to Udine. For the return journey she chose a route via Ljubljana, Villach and Salzburg. On the fourth day she finally reached Poing again at 1 a.m., impressively showing what can be achieved with willpower and perseverance.
The bicycle as a lifestyle
Battermann is not alone in her passion. Bicycle tourism in Central Europe has enjoyed steadily growing popularity since the 1980s, as data from Statista show. Around 3.6 million Germans have taken part in cycling trips in recent years. A remarkable trend that is also reflected in the growing number of bicycles and the increasing number of e-bike owners, especially among 45 to 64 year olds.
Many cyclists value their own independence and flexibility when traveling, as the majority organize their tours themselves. They often rely on recommendations, apps or the Internet while they orientate themselves on the well-signposted cycle paths. Most cyclists spend the night in hotels or guesthouses - just like Battermann probably did.
A look into the future
However, her admiration for her own achievements doesn't seem to stop her; Battermann is already planning new adventures. Among other things, she would like to take part in a 24-hour cycling race on the Nürburgring and even attempt an ultra-cycling race from Brussels to Bilbao. This passion for cycling and traveling by bike offers a wonderful way to experience nature and be active at the same time.
Dajana Pechtl, who has established herself as an ambitious triathlete, also has a good hand in cycling. Born in Munich, she delivered an outstanding performance at the 3MUC Triathlon in her hometown in August 2024. What is particularly noteworthy is that Pechtl was the fastest swimmer at the Ironman 70.3 in Poreč in November 2023, which creates a significant connection to Poing's sister city, which also attracts a cyclist like Battermann. In 2025 she will also act as an ambassador for the 3MILLS and FACTOR brands.
So the fascination with cycling is not just a personal adventure for some, but also reflects a larger trend that is becoming more and more established in today's society. With a growing awareness of sustainable mobility and a sense of adventure, cycle tourism is well on its way to remaining popular in the future.
